As I wrote in a PM to you, my new CCFL Benq G2420HD is just fine. It's not perfect, it has all the TN monitor drawbacks, but it induces absolutely no eyestrain, unlike all the LED panels, and I game on it for hours regularly.
I recommend a German site prad.de (most reviews are in german, use Google Translate if necessary) - they started to include "backlight" section into each review, measuring the PWM flicker with osciloscope and providing accurate information about its characteristics.
The one monitor that should be satisfactory is HP ZR2440w - it features over 400Hz PWM duty cycle, which should provide comfortable and stable image. It's not exactly a gaming monitor, though, due to the high resolution (1920x1200) and rather large input lag, but for strategy games it may be just fine.
