I didn't think I'd actually agree with this line of thought, but after reading through this blog article on Slate, I have to say it makes a lot of sense. Obama should drop out. He should drop out NOW. Get out of the race and let the chips fall where they may.
Yup, Obama should get out of the race immediately, if not sooner. Announce that it's for the good of the party, and then walk away. Maybe not go so far as to offer the symbolic gesture and promise of supporting the newly ordained (yeah, I know, she was originally the pre-ordained) candidate, but just leave the big race to the queen of unelectibility.
Hillary Clinton keeps preaching that she's the only one that can win the big states... uh, sure, she's the only one that can win the big states in a race against someone else that is just as liberal as she is but happens to be (a) male, and (
Black. Take away the fact that it's two Democrats competing in an election in any of those 'big states' that Hillary is trumpeting results from and you'd probably find that not only is Obama just as electible as she is, but he is probably much more electible in the general election because he doesn't bring along the nasty baggage that she does.
Hillary Clinton has been lucky so far. Despite her camp's complaints that the media has treated her opponent in the Democratic campaign with kid gloves, she's basically gotten a free pass on all of the mud, dirt, sleeze and slime that would likely be coming her way in the general election. She certainly hasn't seen any real fireworks out of her opponent, who has, by rights, not really even come close to using any real negative campaign tricks against her.
Has Obama been the darling of the media and gotten somewhat a free pass? Probably. But what of it? Seriously, if there was much dirt out there to be found on Obama, it'd be there for the world to see. No Presidential candidate can keep the skeletons in the closet for that long, despite how much the media might be in the tank for them. Eventually the dirt comes out and it makes whatever impact upon the campaign it was destined to make all along. That the campaign has been so relatively clean so far just serves to remind that we aren't in the general election season yet, and we aren't seeing the real mud slinging yet. It's going to come and when it does the question becomes is there really enough mud and dirt out there to fling on Obama or is the worst of what's there the fact that he goes to a church where the leader seems to think more like Kanye West than say Adam West? (Though who knows, maybe Adam West believes similarily to Kanye West that it's a big conspiracy run by the 'man' (who happens to be White) to keep minorities in their places...)
Obama should definitely drop out of the race. Chris Wilson (of Slate) is right. Let Obama drop out and let's watch the Democratic party blow another election that is really their's to lose. When all is said and done the results from such a move would be great -- the once and perhaps finally for all end of the Clinton control of the Democratic party and the definite end of the Bush/Clinton/Bush merry-go-round ride for the country.
