Does having kids make you sick?

I have been sick so often lately that I am starting to think that natural selection failed in letting me become an adult. The thing is, I don't remember being sick much as a kid. Even in college I was only really sick a couple of times. I think everyone has fallen victim to strep throat or the flu at one time or another.

The past couple of years I have had so many sinus problems, colds, etc. I don't know what the deal is! Some people say that you get sick a lot the first couple of years that your kids are in school. They don't seem to get sick much but they bring it home to you. My oldest is in 1st grade and is always coming home with notes saying what the latest plague going through his class is. Luckily, he has only been sick twice this school year. I could more easily count the weeks I was feeling well than otherwise.

This week has really taken the cake though. I don't know what got ahold of me but I am just now starting to feel human again. If I didn't have a house and family to take care of, I would be hybernating. Sprite and toast has been my diet of choice. I'm achy all over and I want my Mommy

Maybe I am just a baby. I just don't recall feel this crummy this often in any other period of my life. I am hoping warm weather will come to stay and take away all of the crud that has been going around. Get the kids outside more so it doesn't keep circulating in the house. Hope I can get my brain back so I can write something more interesting than whining about my ailments.

I was always under the impression that being a parent made you more exempt from being sick. I was very sick growing up, and no matter what I brought home, I could count on one hand the number of times my mom got sick because of me.

Unfortunately, I'm not a parent, so I can't sympathize with you quite yet.

I never get sick, since having a kid. Since at any given moment, I could have to use sick time to take care of a sick child, I don't dare ever take any sick time for myself. Because there is then absolutely no upside to being sick, since I'm going to work no matter what, I find most symptoms trivial.

I got sick more often than my daughter did during her first two years of daycare. It's only been in the last year or so, from age 5 on, that I've been lucky enough to avoid the colds and flus that I caught during those years.
I sympathize, and feel good enough to say that 'yes' once the warm weather arrives, you'll find yourself more well, more often.

Work with kids - get sick
Have little kids - get sick

Why? Cause little kids have such terrible hygeine. By that I mean they cough on each other, they blow their noses in their hands and then touch someone else, and so on. Its so easy then for the kids to pass it onto the parents. I know I did it to my parents, and I KNOW my sister did it to me and my parents.

Chris, I agree. Nose picking is a big problem with these guys and their classmates. I make them wash every time I catch it but it is a constant thing. I thought mine were the only ones until I started helping out with my son's class. They are all a bunch of pickers!

p_conrad, there is a difference between taking sick time and being sick. Moms aren't allowed to be sick. You have to keep going whether you feel like death or not.

Are you taking plenty of vitimen c and e? Washing your hands frequently and keeping them out of your mouth? Just thought I would mention these things just incase but you probably are already taking these precautions and thats a good thing cause they will help I'm sure. GCJ

The kids might not be to blame. There's been a nationwide increase in this sort of thing. Take this, from Dr. Koop.com:

"Sinusitis has been on the rise in the last decade. While reasons for the increase aren't known, doctors
suspect that more pollution and increased resistance to antibiotics may be to blame."

The very thought of having kids makes me ill.

The pregnant female - not a good thing.
Childbirth - you are going force THAT through THERE!?!
Screaming - endless.
Diapers
Puking on my nice shirt
Toys everywhere
Sucking my wallet dry

Smartaz, I think you are onto something. I have had chronic sinus problems all my life but they have gotten much worse the last couple of years. People I know who have never had sinus problems in their life are now starting to. I have never heard of so many kids with asthma before! Luckily neither of my kids have that. Way too many kids have allergies though.

GCJ, I wash my hands so much the skin is barely there I take a huge vitamin formulated for women and get lots of fruits and veggies in. I drink eight 8oz glasses of water a day. I get as much sleep as possible while having two young boys. Everytime I go to the school I find out another one or two of the kids from our neighborhood is out sick. Flu after flu, strep, misc viruses and even scarlet fever have been around us this Winter. I guess I should thank my lucky stars we have had anything worse.
