So one of my friends was discussing the latest gossip and ever notice how when people want to include you on gossip it's about how someone is talking "behind their backs" so now they are talking behind whoever's back to inform you that someone is gossipping about them. Well nothing new there, but what about the term "behind your back" at all. Unfairman might recall this conversation.
Your back is clearly already behind "you" as we usually describe things in reference to their position relative to our area of sight. In this way something that is "right in front of us" is most likely located where we can see it....okay, no problem there. This also implies that since something can be "right in front of us" something can just as well be "right behind us." No problems there either....but what about "behind your back." This seems to suggest that "your back" has a front and back. Or better put, something could logically be located "in front of your back." Well the only thing I can fathom for this is that the front of your back would be your actual back (the nippless face of your torso), or out of the range of normal sight. "Behind your back" would most logically be your chest...or right in front of you. If this is the case, then things said "behind your back" would actually be said in plain view. Someone who is gossipping about someone "behind their back" seems to be saying such cruel things in plain view of the person who is being gossipped about. Someone who is saying things "in front of your back" is probably the one who is saying things about you that you're not aware of.
Any questions?
