Wow!
Reading through some of your back articles (over the summer) I realized that you are one of those that the Army is looking for as an NCO - someone who actually gives a rats ass about people and what's going on.
This article just confirmed that.
I've been reluctant to chime in on either side of this debate for several reasons - I'm an Army brat, so I'm familiar with a lot of the ... less than stellar aspects of military service and those in the military. For the last ... almost 12 years, I've worked for one government contractor or another, so I've not lost touch with the soldiers. I've seen soldiers that are in it for the money. I've seen others that are in because they really didn't have any idea of where they wanted to go in their lives, so they jumped when someone suggested it. I've also seen soldiers, like Pat Tillman, that explicitly set out to serve in the military because it was the most tangible way that they could see of returning something to their country.
Personally, I would be one of those currently over there if not for several health reasons. I had every intention of swearing the oath as a commissioned officer through the ROTC program at my college. Was even already registered for the first series of Military Science courses the next semester when I blew my knee out in a major way. Ever since then ... I've had problems with that knee. When I attempted to enlist (9 years ago, now) (see a pattern here?), I was turned down during the physical at the MEPS station. They're the one's that discovered the arthritis in my back, hands, knees. That's on top of the suspected Lupus, hypertension, and diabetes that I'm dealing with now.
So, while I have the willingness to put my money where my mouth is, I have to do it in a way that I can - I still work for an Army contracter that does work here in the states that allows the soldiers to do their jobs more effectively and more efficiently. I have nothing but the greatest respect for anyone that dons the uniform and swears the oath. Even knowing that not everyone that does so is doing it because of a patriotic reason. I also realize that, regardless of their personal feelings, they have the personal honor to follow orders and do the job, regardless of their personal feelings.
Sheesh. I'm awfully long winded tonight. I apologize for the long response.
Have a cookie, on me.
