Ship Design Paths - Some help Please

Anyone know if there is a thread or an article on ship design paths? I have been playing for a week or so now, and can I heck get my head around achieving larger ships, I can't work out what tech's to develop to switch on Cruisers, Frigates etc - I have tried to follow the "two techs left" etc concept but I never ever seem to get there - i am clearly missing something - can someone help me out?

I don't think that Beta4b has any canned ships other than the Defender. I've gotten all the way up to large hulls, and way into the attack/defense techs, and not found any. I think I saw a post from Cari or Brad saying that they're working on a whole bunch of canned ships, maybe for the next beta drop.

I don't think there are any canned ships, except as the AI is concerned. I've built some very nice custom ships on large hulls that have outmatched the AI's standard Battleships. I wonder if we are able to export our custom ships for other players to import into their games? (provided they achieve the proper requisites of course).

ahh that makes sense - thanks peeps, my 'super defender mark2' is pretty awesome now that I think of it..

What chaps my hide is that my enemys have battlecruisers and I cant get them myself.

Isn't a ship built on a large hull with advanced weapons in the advanced stages essentially a Battlecruiser? I haven't gotten to hulls beyond large yet but I am far into the tech tree for the various weapons and defense systems. If you are similarly equipped to the AI's battlecruisers, you actually do have a battle cruisers... perhaps you should name it a Twersky Class Battlecruiser if that makes you feel better.

aye JMgarth and zeroflux are right I am sure. In fact I quite like the notion of having to build your own configs now that I realise what is going on I will be sad when they bring in Vanilla ships now to be honest but that is inevitable I supose

Will the AI recognize this fact and adjust it's ship building accordingly?

The AI designs its own ships. It doesn't use canned ships either.

It names its ships with names like Battle Cruiser but that's just because that's what it called them.  It'll tagg on a M-2 or whatever to represent what generation it is.

So if you see a Battleship M-9 coming your way, look out, it's a mark 9.
