The Marx Bros. vs. The Three Stooges

Which do you like better?

I saw the Stooges years before I saw the Marxes. I liked the Stooges. Many people say Shemp was the worst. I disagree. I think it was Joe DeRita. But then I saw "Monkey Business" and I was in love. (Not romantically). The Marx's irreverence, quick wit and musical talent just blew me away.

I grew up with the Three Stooges, and love their slap stick.  But no one can beat Groucho for his quick wit and one liners!  I have to say I like Marx Brothers best.  I miss all of them tho.

I hated it when Curly Joe died.  I kind of resented both Shemp and Joe DeRita. I would rate them as a toss up.  They were not bad, I just missed Curly.

The Stooges for me. Groucho was great, but Harpo was creepy.

Shemp was cool....Curly was the best, of course...no one could compare with him. NYUK NYUK NYUK WOOWOOWOO!!! Anyway, "Curly Joe" was okay, but "Joe" was just a Curly clone, as the old song "The Curly Shuffle" said.

Shemp actually came before Curly, (for anyone unfamiliar with Stooge lore, Moe, Curly and Shemp were brothers), but left the act to pursue a different path in entertainment. He came back after Curly suffered a minor stroke and was unable to continue.

My favorite line, among many, from a Stooge short was from "Brideless Groom".

Moe opens the door and bangs Shemp in the back of the head. Shemp turns around, angry;

Shemp: "Why, I oughta---" his face drops when he sees Moe.

Moe: "You oughta what?"

Shemp: (sheepishly) I oughta be more careful!"

I don't know why, but that line tickles me every time.

I don't think that it is right to compare full-length Marx Brothers' movies with Stooges' shorts. (Sure the Stooges did full-lengths, but did the Brothers do shorts? --Maybe they did, but I don't know about them.)

I think it is more appropriate to compare the Marx Brothers to Laurel and Hardy.

Laurel and Hardy: Now those guys were funny!

Did you see the TV movie about the Stooges? The actor playing Joe DeRita said, "I will not take a pie in the face."

The Marx Bros. did a few shorts as promotionals before they started making feature-length films. Such as "I'll Say She Is."
I think it is more appropriate to compare the Marx Brothers to Laurel and Hardy


I don't think Laurel and Hardy made any full-length films.

Yeah, Laurel and Hardy were good. So were Abbott and Costello. I guess the main reason I'm comparing The Marx Bros. and the Stooges is because of the number of them. Three Stooges, Four and then Three Marx Bros.

But I still say the Marxes were the best mainly for their musical talent, which none of those others had. (Or at least showed.)

STOOGES!

The Marx brothers were funny, Groucho in particular. (a master of sarcasm) but overall the stooges were funnier.

The Marx brothers were more.....intelligent comedy, too, I guess. You often had to be quick to keep up with Groucho's one-liners. The Stooges were more physical, of course, but they got off with their good lines, too.

Definitely the Marx brothers, the stooges had great slapstick, but I think Harpo was a match, and can you beat a scene like "a night at the opera" where they end up stuffing about 40 people into that tiny statesroom?

For physical comedy, it's a close match, but for intellectual comedy, (or at least witticisms and one liners) it's Groucho all the way.

Still, that said, nyuk,nyuk,nyuk,nyuk...........
