8 Hours Down, 16 Hours To Go

A slow day of duty

A slow day at the Staff Duty Desk today. Nothing going on but the football games. At least I have that to help me stay awake. I slept poorly last night, so I've been fighting the Z monster already. The good thing though is that a slow day usually means a quiet day and I'd rather the day passed slowly and quietly than eventfully. Nothing good comes from an eventful duty rotation.

I've been watching the doors all day. Apparently, the new CSM likes to come in on the weekend and work. For the first couple of weeks, he hasn't been recognized when he entered the building and people have failed to call "At Ease" for him. There are few things (uniform violations and walking on the grass being on the short list) that can piss off a CSM more than failing to do this. I nearly called "At Ease" when an unfamiliar person walked in earlier today!

Obviously, we have the computer here (otherwise how would I make this post), so I also have this to help me pass time. I'll probably catch up on my blog reading and commenting later this evening when I'm having more trouble staying awake. greywar (a good friend of mine) wrote earlier this week that he has duty today also with his unit (we're not on the same base) and he doesn't have the luxury of net access. I feel for him even though he hates me for my access.

So, joeusers, wish me luck that I get to pass a quiet, uneventful night and that I recognize the CSM when he gets here tomorrow. I may check in later and post again (partly because greywar can't!).

I hope you have a long boring day at work And to give away my lack of military knowledge, what is a CSM? Or put differently, what does the acronym stand for?

Sorry. Sometimes, I'm so used to the acronyms that rule Army life, that I forget they are often military specific and people outside don't know them. CSM is a Command Seargent Major, the highest enlisted rank in the Army (not counting the Command Sergeant Major of the Army, the senior enlisted Soldier Army wide).

God CSM's like that piss me off. Come in on an off day in your scruffy-ass civilian clothes, then insist that you are SO important that everyone should know your face instantly even if they have never seen you so that they can yell like a smacktard about seeing you. Jesus we could do with a few less British landholder traditions in this Army. Or maybe just a few more senior NCO's with a fucking clue.

What was the excuse today, exactly?  Usually it's something extravagant like 'there was a power out and the clock didn't go off then there was all this traffic and there was an accident and it was my civic duty to stop...'...yeah, you know what I mean.  It's never their fault, to hear them talk you'd think they were mister super dooper trooper....

..sorry, i kind of went into a little rant there, huh?  D used to have one troop who played the late game perpetually, and i hated it.....

I heard one I liked that happened in Korea, given by a new private, went like this,

sgt, I missed the last train from I-don't remember-where because they were playing the radio over the announcement system at the train station, and the station was signing off for the night, so they started playing the Star Spangled banner, and I had to stop and salute, so I missed the train, and had to take a taxi all the way back.

This one was - I knew my name was on the list but my chief told me not to worry about it and he'd find someone else to take it for me.

Different story from what the PO on duty at the Navy det told me over the phone, but he doesn't know that. I don't really care, he could have overslept for all I care. He's here now and that's really all that matters. The off going driver (who had to stick around until he showed up) knows his name, too, so he may have to deal with crap over it later.

Well to be honest I have had that exact thing happen to me twice and we just had it happen last week in our own platoon to SGT Monobrow. Hard to tell when a SFC actually means "I will find someone else" or "I am just blowing smoke up your ass!".

Yeah, that happens. But, when the det called me to tell me he was on the way, they told me that the Chief told them that he knew he had the duty and that he should have been there. So, either the Chief forgot or lied...

Either way, he's here and we only have 11 hours to go.

There is that. We've talked a little more and he told me that the reason he was supposed to get the day off from duty was because he worked duty driver on Thanksgiving and this was supposed to be a comp day. He is listed on the roster as having worked that day, so I'm leaning towards believing his story more now. If it is true, I feel for him for having to deal with a CPO like that...
