The Daily Show: Bush's Speech Repetition

I came across this on YouTube; posted by AqfaPhoto; a segment of the Daily Show.

I never know what to think about things of this nature. It just dosn't seem out of the ordinary for a government leader to drill policy home. But then again, I believe it was hitler that said, "Tell the people enough lies over and over, and sooner or later they will believe it."

You seem to have misquoted Hitler. It's also interesting to note that he was referring to propaganda techniques of the Jews, and not any sort of propaganda that the Nazis may have cooked up.

Oh, how I love the Daily Show.

That and the Colbert Report are the only reason I want cable/satellite.

Anything repeated over and over either becomes amusing or simply loses any meaning at all (see catchphrasing). John Stewart is a damn funny guy but the show's own admitted bias is ruthlessly exploited for humor value at the expense of being a terribly viable source of political science. The Daily Show knows this and touts it when people attempt to use them as actual political commentary.

That's part of what I love about it so much. Political commentary farce . . . what fun.

To be honest, my main source of news consists of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report....it let's you know what's going on...but in a more humorous sense...less depressing than the "real" news at any rate.

Did he misquote him, then? I couldn't find that "quote" online, at least not in those words. But Goebbels was speaking of the Allies (the British, specifically), so my point stands. The quote isn't about Nazi propaganda.

Here is the actual quote. It is from Goebbels. But what Xythe is quoting is not quite what was said:


Goebbels (via the OSS): “never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

Thanks for the history lesson pseudo. It seems either I remembered incorrectly, or I was taught or heard wrong.

That and the Colbert Report are the only reason I want cable/satellite.

So in all actuality you're wrong on both counts. First he was "not" talking about the Allies, and second judging from the "exact" quote he "was" talking about Nazi propaganda.

If this:
"never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it"

isn't about propaganda then I have no clue what is.

The phrase Big Lie refers to a propaganda technique which entered mass consciousness with Adolf Hitler's 1925 autobiography Mein Kampf. In that book Hitler wrote that people came to believe that Germany lost World War I in the field due to a propaganda technique used by Jews who were influential in the German press. This technique, he believed, consisted of telling a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe anyone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously". The first documented use of the phrase "big lie" is in the corresponding passage: "in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility".¹

Later, Joseph Goebbels put forth a slightly different theory which has come to be more commonly associated with the phrase big lie. In this theory, the English are attributed with using a propaganda technique wherein they had the mendacity to "lie big" and "stick to it".²

There is an uncited rumor to the effect that Goebbels also offered up his version of the big lie technique without attributing it to either Jewish or Allied propaganda. That uncited quote is the most wide-spread attribution of the big lie, and it is usually given in a context where the implication is that the propaganda technique was invented by Goebbels, who was the propaganda minister for the Third Reich.³

The phrase was also used (on page 51) in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile [1]
