Northen Ireland is counted a part of "the United Kingdom of Great Britain". Brit DOES NOT mean English. Only English means English. Brit means any part of the territories.
For the record, my mother was born in Ireland, and lived in Ireland until she was 13. My father was born in England, although his parents are Welsh. I classify myself as Irish because in terms of bloodline, I have pure Irish on my mothers side for about 400 years, whereas my father's family is Welsh/English
That, and I have an Irish accent. I have no idea where it came from, but it's detectable by any Irish people, and flares up whenever I visit. So as far as I'm concerned I'm Irish.
