Alliances?

Hello,

Please forgive me if this is a Noobish question, but I read the manual and I watched the tutorials and I can't find anywhere a reference regarding the conditions needed for forming an alliance with another Civ. I researched the Alliance technology and it doesn't appear as an option on any of the negotiation screens.

I have warm->Friendly relations with all other civs. I imagine it needs to be even more friendly before this is an option, but is that the only requirment? Also, whats the best way to improve this? I have gifted techs, money and influence to the Altarins for instance, and after the gift they will get as close as friendly, but then the following turn they will suddenly drop to neutral. It seems logical that continued gifts as well as increased trade will influence this, but there is no way to know in the documentation or through the tutorials.

Your relations with the civ you want to ally with must be "close" (nest level after warm).

The best way to improve it is to trade with the civ, help it militarily when under attck (you can give them ships and techs). If you open 2 or 3 trade routes with them it should gradually improve your relations. And if you can manipulate some of their trade partners into attacking them, making them more dependent on you,that will improve the relations even more. In the dialogue screen with the altarians, you should be able to see some info (if you choose another veiw than the viewscreen) including how much of its income come from trade with you. That can help
And avoid giving away influence points !!!

Thanks Nasta! Oh...and don't worry, I control fully 1/3 of the galactic influence, so a 1000 here or there, is a pittance, but it did have an effect on their relations. I do think however, I will go the trade route path. That seems to be the more reliable means by which to secure 'close' relations.

Keep in mind that if you become too powerfull or influent the civs may become worried about you and therefore more difficult to make them close with you. But the trade usually works for me, if not I instigate some fighting and come to the help (it is almost like pointing and saying to anotherr civ "hey they have weapons of massdestruction, I have pictures of it, and they don't like you" so when that civ attacks, I can help my "alliance target" and so grow closer to them). To think that I follow the "good" moral path, what would it be if I was evil?

Well it could be worse. You could instigate the war and while overtly helping "your friend" you could covertly supply his enemy with tech and money! Not enough to win mind you, but enough to keep them at each other for a good long time.

(on the other hand I've been know to do that from time to time, when I need to distract them )


As for your influence points I forgot to add: when you give it away, it lowers your voting capacity in the UP decisions.

This seems to work both ways for me. If you are too strong the big civs will start beating the war drums and getting cool toward you, simply because you are a possible threat. Meanwhile, the small civs love you so much it hurts, my guess is they see you as the guy who'll protect them from the other nasty civs.

However, I don't see any way to avoid this, if you are seen as weak it hurts your diplomacy and those big civs start imagining using your 28 research world as a vacation spot, but if you are strong it hurts your diplomacy and if a war does break out those little civs don’t even make good cannon fodder (personally I'd rather be the latter, I like my research world).

Another thing I forgot to tell you: in the relation screen, and if yoiu have invested enough in espionnage, then you can see the breakdown of your relations with them, which can help understand where you are exactly: it will show for instance +++ for moral alignement (if you share the same), +++ fir trade, --- if you are the most powerful, --- if you had an history of wars with them, etc.
