The Eidolon Cruisers & Corvettes in Sins of a Solar Empire II

Get Harbinger Now

Sins of a Solar Empire II: Harbinger introduced the terrifying Eidolon, and now it is time to take a close look at the Cruisers and Corvettes fielded in Eidolon war fleets. Eidolon Ships all generate Corruption as they fight, increasing their damage output as they do, while suffering gradual damage to their own rather low Hull Point pools once maximum Corruption levels are reached. Many have active use abilities that expend Corruption for various effects, and so timely use of these abilities can stave off some of the worst negative effects of Corruption at the expense of temporarily losing some of their combat prowess. Balancing Ship Corruption is a core feature of the Eidolon's tactical combat gameplay.

Going off the description, since I still have not played them.

A fleet that gets stronger the longer a fight runs and then starts killing itself is a timing problem before it is a power problem. The number that matters is not how much damage the corruption buys, it is how long a fight has to run before the hull loss outruns the damage. If that crossover sits past the length of a normal gravity well engagement, it is a bonus with a frightening description. If it sits inside one, Eidolon fleets want short decisive fights, and Sins fleets have never been good at leaving a fight they are losing.

The abilities are the part I would want to test first. Spending corruption to hold off the damage means spending the thing you were accumulating for, so every time you pull that lever you hand back some of the offence you were fighting to build. That is a real decision if the numbers are close and a formality if they are not.

None of which is what actually worries me about the faction. That is still the map side rather than the ships.
