If you downloaded your software from Stardock's servers, the Trojan did not come from Stardock.

Why do you think it did? Also, which security software identified your problem as a Trojan?

How did you try to uninstall Fences 5?

my malware did remove the virus.

But now I cannot remove Fences 5.  It keeps saying that it is running (which it is not) and therefore cannot remove it.

Trojan virus happened today for me as well with Fences 3, had it installed for years but today is the first time it showed as a virus. Was able to uninstal my app, but now I cannot get it to work. Had to add the trojan file to a whitelist, but my Fences 3 does not work anymore.

I strongly suspect both people reporting this have the same AV program and a recent database update to the AV has incorrectly flagged Fences as a 'trojan'.  

False Positives with system programs such as Stardock's are sadly too common and is the fault of the AV company, not Stardock.

It sounds like Webroot is reporting false positives that is making Fences unable to run (everyone that is reporting this issue is running webroot right now). A false positive is not a virus at all, it is a false reading that mistakes an active program as a virus.

Basically, when this happens the antivirus quarantines and removes files that are required to make Fences run. Without these files Fences just wont be able to function.

Has been in all of our apps for many many years and has not changed in a very long time. 

If it was corrupted by a virus, it was not delivered that way via the installer.

As noted here already, it is almost certainly a false positive.

You are correct.  The reality is...it did not "develop a virus", your AV program was updated with a signature database that was NOT properly verified as it has resulted in returning a false positive.

AV companies are really only as good as how well they target problem files CORRECTLY.  If and when they fail to do so it is a good indicator they are not worth paying for, particularly if they pre-emptively impact on your legitimate/existing software adversely.

No surprise. Webroot once again.

Yes. White list it and then to purge the software (Fences), follow the instructions here: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

You need to do that to make sure that when the intact, fully functional program (Fences) is on your computer Webroot will ignore it.

After rebooting, reinstall Fences and reboot. Fences should then be functional.
