I really don't want to comment on much of the State of the Union speech, but I do want to say Hillary and her friends that led the cheers about the failure to pass any social security reform should be highly embarrassing to any and every Democrat and all other red-blooded U.S. citizens.
The Democrats didn't just sit on their hands during that part of the speech. No, they got up and started cheering, hooting and hollering, led by Hillary and her friends. They were oh so proud of their successful efforts to help keep the bankrupt and corrupt social security program in it's same damaged condition for the forseeable future.
We could have, and should have, taken advantage of the Presidents leadership on the highly volatile social security issue. Instead Democrats demagogued the issue to death, thanks to their friends among the AARP, the NEA, and many other unions and others. Instead of offering up alternatives, they let the President waste political capital (and sat back and watched with glee) and helped us move another year closer to the time when more goes out of the social security system than could possibly come in.
The Democrats are sure that they will fix the problem with a quick fix 'tweak' that will raise taxes on someone, at least they hope that will be the case. They could have proposed a big raise in the cap on wages that are subject to social security contributions. That is something that some Republicans actually did float as a potential part of a bigger fix. Instead, again, the Democrats sat back and delayed and obstructred, and confused the issue.
For that, Democrats should be embarrased and ashamed of themselves. Their behavior on the topic during the State of the Union speech was reprehensible. I would hope that the electorate would call them on it, but alas our electorate has short memories, and typically will have moved well beyond the topic when the next election cycle comes around.
