Homemade humus

My wife and I really love humus. It is interesting, because it is one of those things we just never had before we moved out here to NC. Not a lot of humus to be found in good, old homogeneous Utah (perhaps there is more now, it has been a few years, and I don't really recall looking for it). But one of the things that really bugs me is just how dang expensive it is, for not a whole lot of stuff.

So, for our New Year's party, I decided to make some on my own, along with homemade pita chips. It turned out really good. In fact, good enough that my wife is now asking me to make ti more often (just made some tonight).

The best part is it is dang easy, and really quite cheap as well. Here is my recipe, and if others make their own, please share!

One can chick-peas
3 tbsp tahini
4 cloves garlics (crushed in a press is the way I do it)
Olive oil to taste (and to thin it up a bit)
A bit of salt (again to taste)
Cayenne pepper (give it a little heat)

For the pita chips we just buy pita bread, cut it up and then a quick spray of Pam (or something equivalent) and some garlic salt. Stick them in the oven, good eats.

Yeah, I love humus too (although here we spell it differently - hoummos - but anyway...). I've been making my own for sometime now, even though it is relatively cheap to buy here. There is nothing quite like anything homemade. I also add a little lemon or lime juice and I make sure the olive oil is a good virgin type. A little cayenne is a good thing or even a little chilli powder but I don't use salt.

We only buy extra virgin olive oil, so it works great. But I will have to toss in a little bit of lime juice and see what that does for it. Thanks for the idea!

I like home made hummus much better than store bought. Good recipe, and definately try the lemon juice.

I found  your opening kind of amusing!  I would never have thought of NC as an adventerous place when it comes to food, but I guess in the Research Triangle it might be.

I will have to try some more Hummus.  I have only had it twice, but it was pretty good.

Here is my recipe:

1 can Garbanzo beans (chickpeas) (reserve liquid)
3 TBS roasted sesame seeds
3 TBS olive oil
3 cloves garlic (more if you like)
2 TBS lemon juice
2 tsp salt
1 TBS Cumin

Blend in food processor or blender until smooth (or as smooth as you like).  Add reserved liquid if needed.

Ah yes, Cumin... I knew there was something I forgot. I also use a tbs of Cumin (one of my favourite spices).
