Nation States is a free online game. You control a small country that you can rule as you see fit. You are asked a series of questions about what you want your country to be like at setup. Then you get a short description such as this one of my nation:

The Oppressed Peoples of Blood Gulch Canyon is a tiny, pleasant nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, hard-working population of 6 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The medium-sized government juggles the competing demands of Defence, Social Welfare, and Commerce. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 10%. A substantial private sector is dominated by the Uranium Mining industry.

Voting is compulsory and college students make ends meet by selling their kidneys. Crime is a problem, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Blood Gulch Canyon's national animal is the two-toed sloth and its currency is the dollar.

Blood Gulch Canyon is ranked 28th in the region and 82,917th in the world for Largest Soda Pop Sector.



Decisions you make determine whether your nation is a dictatorship, a capitalist paradise, a nanny state, whatever.

You also get "Issues" every so often (frequency determined in settings you can change). These are like the morality events in Galactic Civilizations. Legalize the selling of organs for money? Mandate compulsory voting amongst your population? You can dismiss the issue or make a choice. This affects your nation's description. There are rankings, a UN, and regions/alliances.

You can even upload your own flag!

The Empire of Sir Peter Maxwell is a tiny, economically powerful nation, renowned for its absence of drug laws. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 5 million are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded, pro-business individuals concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Commerce and Defence are secondary priorities. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Furniture Restoration, Trout Farming, and Information Technology industries.

Crime is a major problem. Sir Peter Maxwell's national animal is the wolf dog, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the maxwell.

The Rogue Nation of Powerful Supervillians is a tiny, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 5 million are free to succeed or fail in life on their own merits; the successful tend to enjoy an opulent (but moralistic) lifestyle, while the failures can be seen crowding out most jails.

There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals is mainly concerned with Commerce, although Law & Order and Defence are on the agenda. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Beef-Based Agriculture, Trout Farming, and Information Technology industries.

Crime is a serious problem, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Powerful Supervillians's national animal is the star-nosed mole, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the noogie.

The Kingdom of Mughanistan is a huge, devout nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of 275 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The enormous government juggles the competing demands of Education, Religion & Spirituality, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 34%, but much higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is led by the Uranium Mining industry, followed by Basket Weaving and Cheese Exports.

Child labor has been outlawed, genetic research is temporarily tied up in government red tape, citizens select which government department gets their income tax dollars each year, and nudity is frowned upon. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Mughanistan's national animal is the penguin, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the dollar.

i just let my scientists clone people, but forced all the people to vote in elections. and now tv studios are free to hire as many/few minority actors they want. oh and college students are selling their kidneys to make ends meet. hooray for blood gulch!

you can choose a different region to live in as well to band together. someone should make a joeuser region. (not me, i am happy at my region)

I have had a problem in the Empire Of Sir Peter Maxwell:

The increasingly militant Animal Liberation Front struck again last night, freeing dozens of chickens bound for delicious snack packs.

My Economic advisor Pip FredericksonI came up with a novel solution - "You don't need to take away the people's right to choose. You just need to build the costs of animal suffering into the price. A tax on meat-eating, in proportion to the amount of cruelty involved, would do the trick. Plus think of the benefit for the national coffers! Of course, poor people wouldn't be able to afford meat, but that's just more incentive for them to get jobs."
