A recent discussion equated the B-word, with the N-Word. I think there is no comparison. Why?
The N-word has one use and one use only. To denigrate a race. That's it. End of discussion.
The B-word, Bitch is a multi-purpose word. It can be used to denigrate a gender, although when used by people with more than 2 teeth, that is rarely the case. Bitch is a full flavored word, second only to Shit in its uses. And most are used to describe a mood, place or thing. And lastly a person.
I can be a bitch, but I am not female. I can be bitchy. The day can be a bitch. That bolt is a real bitch to loosen. The lawn mower was a bitch to start. And the accurate term, that bitch is in heat (down rover!). It has many uses, and some are very appropriate.
But it can be abused. It can be used to describe a strong woman. I hate that. I have spent my life with a lot of strong women. They can be Bitchy at times, but they are not bitches. I am not afraid of a strong woman. Indeed, I find strong women to be much preferable to the June Cleavers of this world. I was raised that way. My Best boss of all time (narrowly) was a woman about 4'10" tall. And the best boss you could ever have! She did not care for the June Cleavers either (they are great in the house, but not in the workplace). The one peer that I respected most was a 5'10" lady by the name of Ande. She did not take no shit! I respected her greatly and we got along very well. I miss her.
My Mother was a strong woman. What do you call a lady who almost single handedly raises 7 children while working over 75% of the time? A Bitch? Want a fat lip?
But that is my point. The word can be abused, and is abused ON OCCASION. However, the word is used correctly in a lot of situations that may be derogatory to the day, bolt or lawn mower, but not to a person. And the last time I checked, Days, Things and Animals did not have the same rights as people.
So, if you have not guessed yet, yes I am Bitching. Bitch is not the same as the N-word. And the 2 can never be equated. Someone can call me a frog. I am, but that is not the same. Limey, Yankee, even Pole is not the same. Those can be used as hate words, but they are not always used that way. Or even in a derogatory way. I am sure there are other words in other cultures like the N-word, but in American English (Yea we are co-opting your language you Aussies and Brits!), it is really the one that is the worst. not even Cracker or honky compare. Although I am sure some use them with the same intent. (there just is not the history behind them).
Other words, like colored, Negro, and even to some degree black, have grown out of favor. But they never carried the hate and racism of the N-word. The former 2 are dying out (except in the NAACP) as the people who grew up using them, not in a derogatory way, are themselves dying out.
But Bitch, like Shit, never will. Why? Because it is very versatile and descriptive of many moods, things, events, animals, and places (Utah was a Bitch!). Any word can be bastardized. But that does not make the word bad because bad people try to use it as an epitaph.
So bitch at me all you want. It is my vocabulary to stay. I may bitch back at you, but on only a rare occasion will I call anyone a bitch. And then I mean you are being bitchy, not that you are one.
Bitch session is now open.
