Rehnquist gone... Democrats and liberals start worrying

Chief Justice Rehnquist has died.

Democrats and liberals in the U.S.A. will of course immediately start in full panic mode. With the news cycle still working on Hurricane Katrina, the Judge Roberts confirmation hearings have been bumped from the news, but now there will be a bigger concern -- who replaces Rehnquist? And who gets promoted to Chief Justice (and helps set direction for the court's business).

Be ready conservatives, and conservative leaners. You know that the rhetoric is going to get ratched way up very soon. Very, very soon!

The liberals are losing on pretty much everthing they are trying against Bush. The democratic party is about to implode.

Considering some of the complete trash that Myrr has posted tonite trying to tar and feather George W. Bush over the response to Katrina, I expect when the news really reaches Myrr he'll be much more concerned with what happens in the court than what other mud he can find to fling.

I'm sure there are gonna be screams that Abortion rights will be rolled back, privacy rights are going to be gone, a police state is about to engulf all of us, and all of us are doomed because George W. now will name two justices, not just one. And by the way, there are still a few others on the current court that are not in the greatest of health, are advancing in age, and could wind up opening another potential nominee for W. to really re-shape the court with.

Again, the rhetoric is going to get ratcheted up very quickly and very nastily. Be prepared, and perhaps even be a bit fearful.

They had material on several potentials ready to go before he nominated Roberts. They no doubt already have their form letters poised.

"Your freedoms are in jeopardy!! This man kicks dogs and is suspected of molesting children!!! He pays his illegal maid in chocolate coins!!! They are coming for your OBGYN and your copy of The Communist Manifesto!!!!

Support our efforts to block the nomination of (insert conservative here)!!"

Yup Baker, it's coming and it'll be loud.

Though, you know I wonder how much info W. really had about Rehnquist's health and how quickly this end would come about. If he really knew the end was coming, then it's entirely possible that (if you want to believe in conspiracy theories at all) Judge Roberts is gonna be the more moderate of W.'s picks, and it's also quite possible that several other things will happen here:

1. Clarence Thomas will be elevated to Chief Justice, with W. and his friends setting up the Democrats to have to go into full blown attack mode against a minority who would be elevated to the highest level in the courts. (And there will be beliefs that Scalia will be the puppet-master in the court, with Clarence Thomas serving as his puppet).

2. A conservative female candidate will likely get the nomination for the new opening (as an associate justice). There were several "runner ups" from Judge Roberts' nomination selection, including a few female choices. I remember one being discussed as quite conservative. Again, setting Democrats up to have to attack a minority again, which could really put egg on their political faces.

Susan Estrich has commented on Fox News (which is running live tonite) on the possible candidate for the opening. She brought up the fact that one of the "top runner ups" for the nomination that is going to Judge Roberts was of course a female judge, from --- ooops, feeding the conspiracy even more (it must be true, W. must have controlled the weather and sent the storm to attack New Orleans just for this purpose) -- New Orleans: Edith Brown Clement

To be honest, I have a feeling he won't leapfrog anyone into the seat. I may be wrong, but I think he'll pass the title of Chief Justice to an already-sitting, moderate Justice that libs can stomach, and then try to the new empty seat with someone more conservative.

I wouldn't be so quick to think he'll pass the Chief job to a moderate. He has no reason to try to placate moderates or liberals at all. If he does, great, but again, he has no reason to do so. The liberals (Schumer, Kennedy, etc.) can scream all they want, but they don't have the votes to stop any nominee, and if they do filibuster, the GOP can still go nuk-u-lar and totally defeat the Democrats in the process. If that happens, then the Democrats will be a completely ineffective party, unable to do anything in the Congress, and unable to hold back in the last bastion of freedom -- the courts.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush on Monday nominated John Roberts to succeed William H. Rehnquist as chief justice and called on the Senate to confirm him before the Supreme Court opens its fall term on Oct. 3, ensuring a full 9-member high court.

The swift move would promote to the Supreme Court's top job a newcomer who currently is being considered as one of eight associate justices. Retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has said she will remain on the job until her replacement is confirmed.

"I am honored and humbled by the confidence the president has shown in me," Roberts said, standing alongside Bush in the Oval Office. "I am very much aware that if I am confirmed I would succeed a man I deeply respect and admire, a man who has been very kind to me for 25 years."

I suspect you may get really unhappy soon if O'Connor is actually replaced with Gonzales (now that Roberts is replacing Rehnquist instead of O'Connor).

I don't think Gonzales would be a good choice, but Bush could certainly do worse.
