After reading little whip’s « How People Become Homeless » article i started thinking a bout drugs and how they destroy the lives of many. But sometimes, these lives are already broken before they even start the drugs.
It saddened me what people put themselves (and the ones that are close to them) through to have their next fix. Nothing else matters anymore, not a nice house, not a job, not even their kids if they happen to have them.
So where does the problem come from? From the fact that there are addictive substances out there? Well partly yes. Young people in their I’m-invincible-and-hot state of mind tend to want to try and taste every thing and peer pressure doesn’t help.
But most of the time there is an existing problem and the loads that this people carry has become to heavy to bear.I’m thinking of alcoholics for example. There’s a French saying that goes “boire pour oublier” (to drink in order to forget).
So what should be done?
*Find and destroy the drugs and those who make a living out of it? At least the drugs being a temptation to kids will be solved. But there is always going to be a moron out there to start all over again and become rich out of other’s people misery. Plus there are other things that can become a drug when you’re low: alcohol, cigarettes, casinos even jobs (isn’t ‘workaholic’ a word?).
*Or reach out to those who need help now, before they get into more trouble? If they’re carefree and if they know they can lean on someone, the drugs issue would probably not even cross their mind. I guess it’s like suicide really, except in the case of addictions you kill yourself slowly…
I suppose both should be done. But gosh, that’s a helluva lot work…
