Reading through some of The Express, a sister publication "freebie" of The Washington Post, there's this comment at the end of an article that discusses Border Project Wraps Up, Ariz. 'Minuteman' patrol ends to mixed reviews:
One of the primary organizers, James Gilchrist of Southern California, declared "unconditional victory" at the Arizona border on April 18 and said he was turning his attention to employers who hire illegal workers.
story apparently originally credited to Gail Gibson (The Baltimore Sun)
YES!!!!
This man "gets it", he sees where the problem really is, and apparently he's ready to turn his aim directly on it.
Pop quiz: what is the real reason that illegal immigation is a problem in this country?
Feel free to answer that rhetorical question any way you please. My own answer is simply: money.
Money can be made easily in this country, or at least fairly easily, while in other countries -- especially, unfortunately Mexico -- the jobs are not as plentiful and the payment for work performed is not as generous, even when compared to relatively paltry wages paid here.
Until money can be removed from the equation as an incentive for coming across the borders illegally, we'll continue to have problems with border security. People will always try to cheat the system by enterring illegally, and in another important component of the equation, people will try to cheat the system by employing illegals who work at lower rates than others who might take the jobs.
The problem is multi-faceted. We have employers that will pay low wages to multiple migrant workers because they can get that plentiful labor at low rates. The employers are competing against other employers that will do the same thing, and in an effort to be the lowest bidder and win the business contracts they'll use every trick they can, including ignoring rules, regulations and laws that are already in effect.
We need better enforcement of our existing laws, and we need a serious crackdown on employers that are not living within the law. I hope that the Minutemen can shed much more light and publicity on this area, and hope it leads to more tightening of our borders.
