Still Alive?

Yeah, last time I checked...

Hi everyone

I kind of almost forgot this place existed... actually, I can't back that up, but it has been a while since a new blog graced the Teegstar homepage. Life's been busy, but cool, in case anyone's been wondering. But then I started this blog writing for myself, not others, and if I'm going to continue it I think I should maintain that attitude about it.

Today is Labour Day in Queensland. The day when lefties and unionists across the state unite and celebrate their right to good working conditions and appropriate amounts of leave. And where am I, a journalist, arguably one of the more left-leaning professions around? At work, of course. The paper never sleeps!

Truth be known, I don't really mind. I've got a bit of writing to get through today but it's not a terribly taxing day, due to my organisational skills coming into full force on Friday (and a nice little bout of alliteration there too). So today it's just me and the keyboard, no phone calls or interviews to do. I'm in jeans and sans makeup, perks I choose to take advantage of on days like this to remind myself to take it easy.

Lots has been happening in my life of late. I'm back at uni in my final semester and work has also been busy the past few weeks. I'd been trying to fit in a few days of general reporting at the newspaper's main office as well as my main duties producing my little Saturday section, which didn't really end up working. Between 12+ hour days on the days I go to uni and my studies on the days I don't, I was running myself dry and I felt it was beginning to show in my work. I've cut myself back to my old working routine now which works much better. If the main office need me, they can call but I'm not going to bust a gut doing more than I need to while I'm still studying.

The wedding plans are going pretty well too. Matthew and I met with and booked our photographers on the weekend which was really exciting!! They're a Christian husband-and-wife team who both shoot photos on the day -- he does all the posed photos and she shoots more candid shots so you get a mix of styles. They seem very nice and should be fun to work with. My next to-do item (apart from finishing the engagement thank-you notes) is to do some research on flowers. I have some vague ideas about what I want, but I'm a bit nervous about talking to a florist coz I kind of don't want to know how much it's all going to be! Planning a wedding is shaping up to be kind of bizarre... not the sort of thing I really ever saw myself doing. That is to say, I always knew I would get married, which generally includes a wedding of some sort, but the whole process is very detailed and girly which I didn't really see as being my thing. Funnily enough, I'm actually enjoying it. Even better, Matthew wants to be part of all the decisions and seems to be enjoying it all too! I think I'm very lucky in that respect, as I'm not sure most guys would be as keen to be part of the process as he is. Hooray for Matthew!!

Anyway, it's probably about time I got on with a bit more work. I might check in again later and add another warble, but we'll see.

Rocklea Flower market

there's heaps of ...dealers - stalls oh whatever -- but the one on the right as you first walk in (I think his name is Simon) is where I got mine. They have everything and a cold room, they do beatiful boxes and bouquets -- they've got photos of all the weddings they've done (except mine) and I'm pretty sure they were reasonably priced.
This IS my mum we're talking about -- and I know we talked to two florists in Ipswich and a private florist (home who did beautiful weddings but was WAY pricey) before we went to the flower market.

If you know what flowers you want and colours and stuff it will be easier -- and try to take swatches of the bridesmaid dresses if you want them to match.

Anyway that was the best bargain we had (well...bargain that we had to pay for, caterer, cars, videographer, photographers etc were all relatives/friends and free.)

cool, thanks for the advice on that one. mum, arlene and grandma did the flowers for sami's wedding and i think they got them from rocklea as well (but i don't know the details because i think arlene did all the research and buying, and mum and grandma just helped arrange them). i went and saw a florist in blackstone last night -- very trendy looking place once you're there, but really out-of-the-way so i'm sure her overheads aren't as high as a shopping centre florist -- and we talked styles but she didn't give me much indication in the way of prices. also, like you say, i need to get together pictures of my dress and the bridesmaids' dresses (when we find them, we haven't been shopping yet) so i can actually show these people what i'm talking about.
