Study: Half Of Sexually Active Young People Get STDs

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A new study suggests 50 percent of sexually active young people will contract a sexually transmitted disease by the time they're 25.
Dr. James Allen, president the nonprofit group American Social Health Association, said our nation fails to address the problem of STDs in young people.
He said about two-thirds of young people assume they're being tested for STDs during regular health visits when, in fact, such testing is not routine.
Allen also said many STD cases go undetected because some of the symptoms are mild, such as in chlamydia. He said chlamydia untreated can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in women and sterility.
Allen said young people should be educated more on the dangers of contracting STDs and how to protect themselves. And health care providers should make STD screening readily available to sexually active young people.

I had recently posted this article Oral Sex Safe and Not Really Sex, Say U.S. Teens. This is just more of the same bad news.

We are failing our young people, and failing them miserably.

I don't know if the answer is more money (the typical liberal response to a problem like this) fo rmore education, or more money for more free condoms (another typical liberal response) which might encourage more sexual activities, or something completely different.

Honestly, I think the real answer is more attention from parents, more discussion and education from parents, and more active roles for parents in their children's lifes. More active as in being more aware of what your children are doing, and helping to keep them from rushing into sexual relationships before they are ready, before they are protected, and before they've been educated on *all* of the potential outcomes of those activities.

If you need a negative role model, just point your children towards Michael Vick (see Smoking Gun articles, or other news sources) and start your discussion from there.

You know if these researchers looked in a history book they might find out that this has always been true for sexually active young adults who don't take precautions.

You can trace this back to America probably to the colonial days or western days, etc. (CLAP comes to mind).

I just think some researchers took an easy idea and cashed in on it, with little thought or effort into their research since the result was going to be true regardless.
