I want to mention this so that it gets nipped in the bud.
In a mod to Space Empires IV, a 180kT Explorer class vessel can hold four guns, and a 200kT Escourt can hold five. Investing in a 300kT Frigate buys you a ship that will double that to ten guns. But going the next step up to a 350kT Destroyer doesn't even get room for one more gun.
This has happened because there is a charge for crew quarters and life support that goes up in steps, and there is a charge for warp core and nacelle sizes that goes up in steps, and there is a charge for the number of nacelles. That's five different charges for hull increases, before actually paying for it in research points and then in resources (three different charges there), bringing the grand total to nine separate charges for a hull size increase! Does this seem just a little...stupid?
I think it's because a string of people came along one a time and just had to "make it cost something", in prerequiste pre-filled hull spaces, changing sized parts, changing number of parts required, research points, and resources spent to purchase item. That's a lot of prices to pay, and they got messed up because no one was looking at the overall result.
