Randomize me

Untitled When you can't put together a decent blog from a solid thought, why not just through together a crappy one with a whole lot of random thoughts? Seems like a good idea to me. Bon voyage!

  • Reading the first few hundred pages of "The Stand" while sick is a bit of a surreal experience. Reading page after page in which the slightest sneeze or sniffle is a harbinger of doom does funny things to your mind. *Sniffle* *Ah-Choo!* Uh-oh, am I going to die?


  • Nasal decongestant spray is evil. Evil I tell you. Congested, I made the foolish mistake of using some last night. It has been years since the last time I tried, so I forgot just how bad it burns. It burns! It burns! Tears streaming down my face, I tossed and turned for nearly a half an hour until I gave up. 800 mg of ibuprofen and an hour of Unreal Tournament 2004 brought the pain and my exhaustion to the right levels to finally succumb to sleep. That bottle went in the trash. Evil I say!


  • I don't really like being sick. And I have been pretty sick the past few days. But just when I think it really sucks I remember what it was like to have Dengue hemorrhagic fever. Sort of puts things into perspective.


  • In a couple of hours my wife and I will embark on the adventure of being parents to a teenage girl. Should be fun. I am scared out of my mind.


  • My wife is now officially full-term (38 weeks). The doctor said she is okay to go into labor any time now. History tells us not to get our hopes up. Circumstances tell us 2 more weeks would be really nice. Are you listening Big Al?


  • Our two year old is really growing up. Her sentences are becoming more clear and coherent, we have had multiple successful potty attempts now, and her personality is really shining through. It is loads of fun. Sort of sad too, though.


  • I am amazed at how disrespectful and juvenile some adults can act at times. Any Wincustomize readers who stumble here will know of what I reference. Oh, but I suppose the good old JUers have seen our own share recently, eh?


  • I got an email saying the invitations to Medical Families Weekend had been sent out. I keep checking the mail, but my wife hasn't got hers. Hmm, odd. Or perhaps this is just another example of Duke Med being myopic in their definition of medical student and family. The latter is the odds on favorite. But I'm not bitter, just pissed off.


  • I have had a couple ideas in the past few weeks for some really cool stories. I hope I can get them down at some point, before they become dusty memories.


  • People expecting their first child are cute. In a clueless sort of way. I was talking to a friend (also a parent of two) and she mentioned some folks expecting their first were upset that folks kept giving them "Onesies". They had 12 and were ready to start giving some away. Silly, clueless person. You can go through 12 onesies in two days. They also thought 7 outfits was enough: one for each day. I just laugh. Ha. Ha.


  • Finally, Shades, this one is for you. Good game yesterday, eh?

I'm sorry, but I'm reading this sentence, and it's coming across to me that you're saying you actually had this.  Am I reading this right?  You had, and survived, Dengue?  If so....wow.  Wow.

This is a busy time for you, n'est pas?  2 new children in your household in the matter of a couple of weeks (hopefully, anyway). You have my admiration; it's a noble and worthwhile thing that you're doing.

Yep, had it, got the crap kicked out of me by it, and then kicked its butt. Sort of a badge of courage I wear when talking to microbiologists/infectious disease folks. I just love to see the look on their face when they are talking about Dengue and I say "I had that".

Fortunately never really got to the hemorrhagic stage, other than some small capillaries in the skin (makes some very funky red spots). Still sucked. They don't call it "bone-breaking fever" for nothing. I have never hurt so bad in my life.

Ah Dev, I empathize with you, I'm still sick too but not as bad as last week. Darn the sneezing and sniffling. As for nose drops, oh no, Ilearned my lessons where that is concerned, never again!

Congrats again on your soon to be expanded family. You know, you want the kids to grow up so they can be independent and when they do, it's like, where did my baby go? I'm there too!

Feel better and drink lots of liquid.

Finally, Shades, this one is for you. Good game yesterday, eh?


It was actually a surprisingly good game. I was annoyed with the officiating all around--too many petty fouls were called on both teams--enough with the whistle blowing, just let them play the game.

I'm disappointed that we haven't been able to beat Duke at Duke since I was in college, but some day (hopefully).

Two things I think every first time parent should know. The first is, you can never have too many onesies. The second is, there WILL be days during which you will be convinced your child might be mentally retarded.

Amen. Onesies are a staple, almost as important as diapers. Got to have them and never, ever get rid of extra ones. The second you do you will need them.

You know, you want the kids to grow up so they can be independent and when they do, it's like, where did my baby go? I'm there too!


The crazy thing is, since it is foster care, we are just jumping right into the teenagehood. Will be wild.

Few things ruin a game faster than that for me. As we always used to say, no harm, no foul.

Hey man, what a great idea for a blog. It is something that I'd like to borrow myself, if you don't mind.

Reading the first few hundred pages of "The Stand"


This is one of my favourite Stephen King books. I've been trying to find the tele-movie on DVD but am having all sorts of problems locating a copy here in Australia.

Can't stand being sick either, mate. I'm miserable, cantankerous and horrible to be around.

Good luck with the new addition(s) to the family and that you're over your sneezing and coughing soon. BTW, I am hoping to email you something back today. Oh yeah, get those story ideas down before you forget them. I'm investigating a screen-writing course at the moment as I've got a number of good ideas I'd like to work up as well.

Dengue fever...never heard of it but from you what you've described, it's as bad as it sounds.

What are onesies?


Onesies are a one piece t-shirt out fit thing. They are great because, when the weather is warm enough they can be the whole outfit. Here is a link with some cool examples: Link

Not at all. In my case, I only use for as a 'pet' term for people I consider friends. For a lot of Australians, 'mate' is used for when one forgets someone's name, Rod...er Stu... er...mate?

Yeah it's epidemic in this region I'm in. (But then it's asia, hotbed for all sorts of viruses these days *irony G*) Dengue fever cases are on the rise in some parts of Singapore these days too. Damn thing is becoming national problem here if the measures taken don't help.

It's bad when you get it the first time, it's worse when you get it again. Nasty thing.
