We are all familiar with email SPAM, those unwanted email messaging hawking things we don’t care about. Billions of spam message are sent each day. It’s estimated that over 60 percent of email sent is SPAM. A new word is being introduced into tech-speak. Meet SPIM. Spim is Spam sent over instant-messaging networks.
SPIM to double this year. Whether or not the "Spim" label sticks around, Instant Messages containing spam are likely not going away anytime soon. Spam-loaded IMs will jump from 400 million last year to 1.2 billion this year, according to a recent report from Calif.-based research firm Radicati Group. The report attributes this increase to the growing number of people sending text messages from their phones.
Although the amount of spam IMs pales in comparison to the billions of spam e-mails sent daily, major Internet Service Providers are taking steps to protect IM users. An additional area of concern for SPIM is that it may introduce viruses into phone networks in the form of attachments.
