Time for a rant on Dan (I'd) Rather (not be made to watch any news cast he's a part of)...
With the investigation into what went wrong at CBS to allow a set of bogus documents to be used for a "breaking" story during the latter part of the election cycle (note to the commission, which really failed all us here: what went wrong is that CBS got caught using bogus documents because Rather, Mapes and others WANTED the story to be true, and wanted desperately to put out an anti-Bush story. Something that even the most independent observer should have been able to figure out, but I digress....) over, and with CBS now "spanking" 4 individuals with firings/requests for resignations, we're still left with one of the main figures in the story silent and with CBS noting that he's gone in just a few months anyway, so it really doesn't matter what punishment would have been doled out.
Well, sorry, but in my mind, restitution still needs to made.
Rather should be made to come down off his high hog and make a very clear apology. Not one that is half-assed and only made because he has to. One that is made because it's the right thing to do, and because he knows that he really was wrong.
Finally, to really make good, I suggest that Dan Rather should forfeit his salary from the period when the piece originally ran (back in late October) until when Rather finally leaves his job and that salary should be given to relief agencies that are providing Tsunami relief.
That would be the equivalent of an unpaid suspension - which is what should have happened to begin with - though it leaves Rather still able to preach to his dwindling number of viewers if they choose to watch him.
