Last night I was readin this article about a mini survey on how many times women think of their body a day. There were 5 average Australian women who took the survey and reported they didnt realized they thought of their bodies that often a day. The maximum was 54 times a day and its HUGE! I mean you can think of your new boyfriend who is so amazing and charming 54 times a day for the first couple of months you've known him without it being a surprising number. But your own body? 54 times a day? No its not narcissism, it's lack of self esteem.
It was like 1st thing in the mornin, they put their clothes on and they're already aware of the pounds they need to get rid off, or the kgs they need to put on, or how unfit they feel or whatever. Same thing when they put their makeup on: wrinkles, where's my tan gone?, pimples, dry skin.
They light a cigarette and they think of their body. The smoke gonna make my hair smell, will make me lose weight, gonna make me get a cancer one day...
They step in a room full of people and they wonder if those people notice that they've put on weight.
They go to the bathroom see their reflection in the mirror and they think of their body and how it must be seen through the eyes of others. Of course, most of the thoughts are not 'Way to go! you lookin hot today!'
And you can be sure most of the thoughts are equal to the statement I HATE THIS ENVELOPPE I CALL MY BODY.
Ok, i think of my body too when i want to make an effort for my boyfriend like is he gonna like how this looks on me, or stuff like that. But thats about it. I dont worry about what my workmates think of my body, i'd feel more for what they think of the work i do. And i dont worry over what my friends think of my body, it just doesnt bother me what they think. They do tell me i should put on weight, i say yes and voilà. I'm not gonna say every hour gee i should put on weight.
You may, and it's healthy, want to improve the way you look. But to the point where it comes an obsession, is it really worth it??
Anyway, that's just my opinion and i'm sure it's not shared by everybody. Maybe its because i have been brought up in the "They dont buy your food, so dont you worry what they think" kind of way.
