Icons repeatedly refresh in Stardock Fences in Windows 11

This seems to happen primarily when I’m reading an ebook with Readest. I have not noticed the issue when any other app is primary. The refresh occurs approximately once a minute.

As a workaround, I typically run Readest full screen so that Fences is in the background.

System details:

Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-11950H @ 2.60GHz (2.61 GHz)

Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.7 GB usable)

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Edition Windows 11 Pro

Version 25H2

OS build 26200.6901

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.253.0

 

Three monitors (notebook and two external).

All fences are on screen 1 (left external monitor).

CORRECTION

I have now seen this issue when Readest was not running. The interval remains 60 seconds.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need few more details.

  1. Do you have your wallpaper change every 60 minute?
  2. Do you have set your system accent color automatically change with your wallpaper?
  3. What is your currents installed Fences full version number.
  4. Fences Chameleon enabled?
  5. Fences icon tint turn on?

Thanks. Here are the answers:

  1. Set to picture, using Bing wallpaper which changes daily.
  2. Accent color is set to manual.
  3. 6.00
  4. Chameleon is not enabled.
  5. Icon tint is disabled.

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version (Fences v6.03 Beta) from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Thanks for those suggestions. Here are the results:

tl/dr: No change. Icons still refresh every minute.

STEPS:

  1. Created backup.
  2. Ran BAT file as administrator.
  3. Bitdefender intercepted the operation and deleted the file.
  4. After spending far too much time with Bitdefender, I uninstalled it.
  5. Ran BAT file as administrator. Success.
  6. Rebooted.
  7. Installed Fences beta from Object Desktop (Insider) - version 6.03 running.
  8. Restored backup.
  9. The icons still refresh approximately every 60 seconds.

Great, so its not Fences installation issue by itself. Perhaps there is something else conflicting with Fences. Just as a test disable Fences and observe your desktop icons does the issue appear without Fences loaded?

To temporary unload Fences, turn off this switch.

Try that and report back. Also, if possible, make a short video upload it on any video sharing site and post its link here. Or if you can make a short gif (below 5Mb) you can post it directly here in the forum. We need to see your issue so we might understand it better.

Thank you for the video. That big clock on your desktop, is that there all the time? Or, it just show up for these video capture? If its all the time. Try disable it temporarily and see if the issue still show up. Also, I did asked if you turn off Fences, does the issue still appear?

Sorry my response was unclear.

The video illustrates that the issue occurs whether Fences is running or not. There are two segments in the video, first with Fences activated and second with Fences deactivated:

  1. At x:06 icons refresh in Fences (16 seconds past the minute on the clock).
  2. At x:14 icons refresh without Fences (16 seconds past the minute on the clock).

I included the clock (which is normally on screen three) to illustrate that the refresh happens at 16 seconds after each minute.

The problem persists if the clock (Aero Clock) is NOT loaded.

It appears the issue isn’t related to Fences itself. You might want to try performing a Clean Boot to check if another application is causing the problem. You can refer to the guide here:

Fences Clean Boot Instructions

Please note that Clean Boot should be done carefully, as it temporarily disables startup items and services. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

I don’t know if this is a PERMANENT fix, but the problem ended when I deleted all of the “iconcache” files in AppData/Local.

Steps: 

  1. Run CMD as Administrator.
  2. cd %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
  3. taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  4. del /f iconcache*.*
  5. explorer
