Just taking a little time to stop and remember a day that was supposed to live in infamy.
Before September 11, 2001 the worst loss of life had been Pearl Harbor, back on December 7, 1941.
A note on the USS Oklahoma in the newspaper, noting that a memorial is finally being created for the 400+ sailors that died on that ship when it capsized back in the attack on Pearl Harbor reminded me that today is that day - December 7. As usual, the math in my head doesn't always add up fast, but I run through the calculator real quick and realize that it's been 63 years since that attack took place.
63 years ago, people were sleeping, going to Church (it was a Sunday), and going on with their lives not knowing that an attack was taking place, or going to take place, in Pearl Harbor.
By the next day, it was known around the world, and noted in speeches in front of Congress.
Now we go on, in many ways, as if that day barely happened. It was so long ago that most of the generation that lived during that time is gone, or are fading fast. Most of our youth have probably barely read about or know about Pearl Harbor, as our schools have excised the materials that taught about Pearl Harbor for fear that the materials would be insensitive and not politically correct.
It's a long time ago, and perhaps a half a world away for most of us, but it is a time that should be remembered.
