Although it looks like you have earth magic.  Start making a land bridge.

Having 'bottleneck' maps isn't my preferance and definition of fun. I much prefer the maps that are single continent carved up by mountain ranges. True, it's still a type of bottleneck, but never seems as bad as on water.

IMO, hoard lots of mana and start raising land straight north.  You're bound to 'land ho!' eventually.

There was nothing around for miles.  I finally found another place to settle.  By the time I could even get a second city started.  I was really far behind.

I actually thought it was kind of fun.  I fell to far behind, but I killed a lot of Tarth before I fell.

Or release it, then lower land, so it can't get you! Release the Kraken!! (dragon, whatever )
