An idea on dealing with the AI's uncainy ability to find every build spot before you can!

What if there were a city build limit and outpost limit? City and outpost limits can be increased through techs...

Perhaps. Maybe even just require a certain 'total population' to allow you to found new cities. Outposts, on the other hand, should require a city to be a certain distance away, say max 10 squares.

Im not a fan of artificial boundaries (max 2 cities), id rather have cities cost way more to plop down so its a major expensive ticket to expand like crazy, and if he is expanding you are building military to grab all the nice cities he laid out for you.

Outpost max distance from cities, is a good idea though especially if I would be able to change home city of the outposts

Another option is to let the monsters loose. If the AI had to clear the wildlife and defend its cities, it would expand much more slowly - that created a problem for human players in Beta 3 when monsters attacked us but not the AI factions. Monsters seem to be a lot more docile in Beta 4. I'd prefer them to be aggressive as long as they treat all factions equally.

Agree with this too
You could follow the "Wilderness" stat idea posted in another post.

Just play with dense monsters.  That slows the AI down a lot.

I will have to try that, on default settings I've played one seemingly balanced game. This was due to the fact i was blocked (due to ocean and mountains) from attack from every faction but one. Which allowed me to expand peacefully! However, in most games I play Resoln and Gilden are the top factions... until they declare war on me
