Stardock problems means I can't play

Last night when I was going to put some serious hours into FE, the Stardock servers were down for maintenance. The message I got, when trying to load the homepage, said servers would be up in less than an hour. I kept trying to log in for 3 hours and then gave up and went to bed.

This whole thing got me thinking that, in essence, this means that every time Stardock servers has a problem or their ISP has a problem or my ISP has a problem, I wont be able to play.

It is so very sad that I can not play a single player game, that I payed for, on my own computer whenever I want to.

This is only for the beta.  The release version won't have the internet connection requirement.

It's annoying , but given Stardock's rep on DRM I assume it's for the reasons they state.

 

I just wish they'd implement static values that would be used if it couldn't find the values online, or allowed using the last known values- that would solve the problem.

As we all know, Ubisoft uses a similar type of DRM that is universally loathed and shunned. I have to think that Stardock is smart enough not to go there. This is what could happen if they did:

  • When gaming companies require an Internet connection for games then sometimes gamers can't play
  • When gamers can't play, they get angry
  • When they get angry, they think bad thoughts about the gaming company
  • When they think bad thoughts about the gaming company, the company ends up in a roadside ditch
  • Don't end up in a roadside ditch, Stardock.

Yes, this is humor.

They used this same setup for War of Magic, they aren't going to switch it around for FE.

 

No reason to fear until it actually does happen.  Also Stardock is much smaller then Ubisoft, and would suffer more.

Our betas have done this since Galactic Civilizations II. We regularly update the XML data and this prevents users from having to download an "update".
