But that's a waste. Assuming you go ahead and make a research upgrade on a titan. What happens when you have to send that titan into battle? What happens when it loses? You've just lost your research capabilities. Building trade ports on every planet is actually a dumb thing to do. You can actually screw yourself out of good income by cutting your longest trade chain into smaller pieces. Instead, try to maintain the longest chain you possibly can and in the places where you can't build a trade port, build a few research stations in their place. You'll have 8 of each up in no time and have better income because of it, and your titan can be upgraded with something more useful for protecting your planet or kicking the crap out of an invading fleet.
Never said it wasn't, however, you asked for opinions and you got one. Just because it doesn't line up with yours perfectly doesn't mean it's contradicting yours.

Modding already takes advantage of a lot of things the core game doesn't.

Why do you say I misunderstand? I think I actually have a better understanding of things then you do. You don't know what a titan can do. You can't say that they can do this or that any more then I can. Starbases can be equipped with a frigate factory. If, like I said, a titan can be customized with a capital ship factory and build caps on the go, why the hell would I want it to build a frigate factory that could build a constructor to build a capital ship factory to build a capital ship... That's too much building and wasting of resources...
Now here's where I understand the game better then you. In order for your method to work, you have to have logistic slots available. In your example of fighting it out in places where you cannot own the planet, such as a gas giant, where are you getting the logistic slots from to build the cap ship factory with the constructor? Oh yeah, that's right, you don't have any of those. Your claim of my misunderstanding falls completely apart because you don't even understand what you're saying. So that takes us back to my comment where I said it would be pretty cool to be having titans producing caps while running around the system.
What will determine which planetary ring u build on could be based on culture being produced from the titan for an allegiance bonus for that area.
What? What ring? The little dust ring around the planet? The game engine isn't being rewrote. Building on the rings isn't a possibility. I do like the possibility of producing culture from the titan. No current ship does that, but even so, your culture can already spread between stars. Even if you can't own anything in an area, as long as your opponents can't either, load up a planet next to a star with nothing but culture centers. That empty little system will be flooded with your culture soon enough.
