Anybody know how to set up a newtwork?

I just got DSL and I got a router so 2 computers can hook up to it. The DSL provider said I could hook up to 4 computers with the one IP address.

So both are working nicely, but I go to network neighborhood and I don't see the other computer. Did I miss something here? Is it because one computer is a 98 machine while the other is XP?

Networking with 98 and XP is not that easy... First of all the user on the 98 system has to exist on the XP system also (with the same password)... You could also run into connection problems between the two if You have the internal XP firewall switched on. 'Simple file sharing' (I hope that is the correct english term) activated can also cause problems for the 98 computer to connect to the XP one. And last but not least : Both machines have to be in the same workgroup and the same ip-adress range.

hmmmm... I guess I'll be moving files in a different way then.

Better make room on my zip drives cause I got a few gigs to move.

If You have that much to move, I would get into the trouble of doing a network connection.

JTB, I know you pain, I run win XP on my standard pc, and win 98 2e edition on my server. on XP you have a map named sharedocs, or something like that. I can see that map from my win 98, but I cant see my win98 pc from my xp machine.... really trouble.

I had a small home network (Four comps) a little while ago...

I went out and bought an ethernet switch/router, and connected all four comps to it. Then I connected the DSL modem to the remaining jack in the router (The DSL modem had a 10base-T port in the back) and then connected to my ISP using our main comp. You have to turn on Internet Connection Sharing. I was runnin a variety of OSes on the comps...Win Xp Home, 2k Pro, ME and Linux Mandrake 8.2. Also, make sure that the main computers IP address is set to 192.168.2.1 and have the other comps 'Discover network address automatically'. (Or something to that effect)

hm, I also use a switch/hub for my server and another pc, however you can also put another network card in your main pc, and put a cable between them, so you have comp2 >>>> comp 1 >>>> internet, that should work, o yeah, btw, make sure you use a cross cable... could be the problem

yeah cross cable is not that common.

It's simplier to grab a router, 3 wires, and connect 2 computers to router, and connect the dsl modem.

Anyway, the minium drivers needed to set a local network is:

Client for microsoft networks
File and printer sharing for microsoft networks
Tcp/Ip

Then you should set one folder to be shared on both computers, preferiable a empty folder you can use to send files or make files aviliable to other computer.

Make sure both computer names is different, and ensure the workgroup name is same, and not the default (MShome usually)

By this point you should be able to see other computer on network from both computers.

I barely understood the last 3 posts.

I figured out one thing and that is if I have one computer as the main computer and the other connected to the main then maybe it would work.

I just thought since all the computers are connected through the router that they would see each other.

Setting up a shared folder on both systems sounds familiar. Would that work even though one computer is XP and the other is 98 (regualar... not the second edition)?

hmmmm... that p2p stuff is looking kinda temping just to transfer the files.

oh and my router is set up such that it has a separate port for the DSL and the other ports are for the computers.

It is a Netgear router.

I think you should try this double network card in the main thing... (if you have a spare card somewhere )

I did it a couple of years a go with a friend of my living accros the street, we grabbed a 50 meter wire, and linked our pc's on a 2e card, we still had our own dsl connection, but could also share stuff.

dunno if anyone has mentioned this but....

set your XP C drive to be open to network connections for anyone ( it will default to only people on your network) and anyone including 98 can see and use the drive.

also you can setup your 98 box for file sharing and move files over to the XP box without messing with shares on the XP box...

in your network settings make sure they are both on the same network with the same net mask...

198.162.0.5 = 98
198.162.0.3 = XP

198.162.0.1 = gateway (router local lan)

Netgear router default local lan : 192.168.0.1 = Gateway for local systems

XP box 192.168.0.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1 (netgear router)

98 box 192.168.0.3
netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1 (netgear router)

XP box shares set Drive so Everyone has control, without password login...
98 just set shares

should work fine..

Actually, that is a very bad idea.

Suppose a hacker broke into the network, that person can install whatever programs he/she wants then set computer to start it at bootup. ( Actually, install is a bad word, it could be just a single exe file )

A special folder for sharing to other computer is highly recommanded.

not going to get past the netgear NAT gateway/router hacking...
also I am assuming that there is a software firewall in operation that controls browser and nttp traffic while also having a virus scanner operating that is activly scanning for vb scripts and such....

cool. I'll give those suggestions a shot. I sounds like it make sense.

(and no I don't have an extra NIC card )

Even if it ends up being unsafe I will only be doing it for a hour or so, just to tranfer the files...

Then again, I had this virus on one of the computer (win98) It ws the Wizzer trojen horse or Fizzer.. looked like this klm123 @ mm or somethinglike that.

Get this... 150 or so files on the computer looking like regular text files...

I got both machines checked and I am using Norton.

Oh and the Netgear Router came with a Firewall (although I seem to have problems with those firewall thingies... sooner or later I get shut out of the internet! Nothin in, nothin out)
