This is one of those games, unfortunately, where a remake is inevitably going to piss people off.
If they change too much, people will complain that you've ruined it.
If they don't change enough, people will complain at being charged to buy what is essentially just the same game with prettier graphics.
It's a no win situation.
I don't know, every similar game usually looses a large chunk of what X-Com had.
I doubt anyone would complain if you added door opening, and more tech trees/research, types of mission but kept hte core gameplay exactly the same (I mean no one important would complain obvious some asstard would).
Personally I prefer real time because it allows better combat mechanics like suppressive fire but that dosn't mean it has to be fast paced. Slow and real time. Have you ever played Men of War? Especially Red Tide? That is a very slow tactical real time game with a huge amount of options and its closer to X-Com combat that most of the X-Com clones lol.
