Making Brains

I had the bright idea to volunteer to make jello brains for my son's school Halloween party.  I just got a new mold that I figured I'd use for our own Halloween party.  I plan to put it on a platter with a place card that says "Abbey- normal".  I've never made a jello brain and now I'm signed on to make 4!

So you have to prop the mold up in the frig and then pour the jello in.  Guess what happened...yep, I spilled purplish red jello all over everything in my frig.  Fortunately I got the mold completely filled.  3 more hours and we'll see how the first attempt at brain making turned out.  I'll be sure to take pictures and post them once I get some completed brains.

Can't wait to see the pics!  We did a severed hand one year (with jello) but it didn't turn out so great.

Sorry about the fridge!  I hate when that happens!

I'm a total clutz so if there's a way to make a mess, I usually find it.  It looks like the first brain is setting up nicely.

One year I did frozen hands.  You spray the inside of a latex glove then pin it to hang in your freezer (that part was tricky) and pour whatever color liquid you like in.  It turned out really cool and we put it in the couldron we had punch in.  Two of the fingers broke of pretty quickly so it looked like a dead hand was giving you the bird from the punch

We did the rubber glove thing with jello, but ours was very mangled, LOL.  We didn't freeze it.  Now we know for next time!  Sounds cool!

Jello brains sounds yummy.  Yuck on the mess though.  I may look for a mold for next year.

This has been a learning experience.  The first brain came out to jiggly and cracked.  The second one was better and the third one looks great.  I reduced the amount of water.  It says to prepare according to regular directions but it ended up being far too much liquid.  The third one is blue and looks perfect.  Two more to go.  I haven't had a chance to take any pics yet but will definitely do so before handing them over to the 3rd graders on Friday. 

I think the last two brains (lime and cherry) will go in the frig over night tonight.  Now I just have cleaning, decorating, pumpkin carving and cooking to do....Halloween is a lot of work!  It's a lot of fun though.

I may look for a mold for next year.
Check Amazon.com.  I got mine for $2 and the teacher gave me a second one to use that she got in the store for $6.  Either way, it's a pretty cheap, fun Halloween treat.  Oh, and it takes 3 small boxes of jello per brain.

Jill if you have a bowl big enough to fit the "brain" mold into, it will help stabilize it while you pour. You can even put ice around to fill the air pockets between the mold and the bowl. You can also add clear Knox gelatin to firm up your wiggly brains.

What a bunch of smarties on this site!  Cool idea, Nitro! 

And $2?  Niiice!

One of my last projects before Halloween is making lanterns for the walkway.  You paint mason jars white and then paint ghost eyes and mouth on them in black (or other colors I guess...neon colors could be fun).  It looks much cuter than it sounds.  Then you put tea-lites in them.  I got LED tea-lites at Target to avoid fire risk, though.

Intitially it was going to be a recycling project, but I kept forgetting and throwing jars away!  I think it would have been cute with mix and match size and shape jars.

Well Tex, if you like that...you could also add a few gummy worms to the jello before it sets for added creepiness, the kids will get a kick out of it.

I figured that out after the first brain but thanks.  It certainly is the way to go.

Another Young Frankenstein fan!
I LOVE Young Frankenstein!  I met Gene Wilder in Horton Bay, MI a Summer long ago.  He seemed like quite a character.  He's shorter than I thought and has the most incredible blue eyes.  We have the movie on DVD and the kids like it too.
