We are currently discussing poverty in our economics class and yesterday while we were looking at data (http://www.census.gov/hhes/poverty/poverty03/pov03fig04.pdf) you can clearly see that while middle aged poverty and elderly poverty are pretty much staying the same child poverty is on the rise. Now obviously this data indicates that either poverty stricken people are having more children or larger families are entering poverty while smaller ones are getting out and I was wondering what could be some possible causes of this happening as the only one I can think of is the partial birth abortion ban but if I am correct that didnt pass that long ago (if last year at all.)
Also another thing that I found interesting is that the avg real (adjusted for inflation) household income pretty much stayed the same (http://www.census.gov/hhes/income/income03/prs04asc.html) but yet poverties on the rise. And I am also curious about some causes of this. And if you believe that it means that the recessions truly turning around and if so why.
