Winstep XtremeIt may be hard to believe, but Winstep Software Technologies, the company behind Winstep, the integrated suite of Windows shell enhancement/replacement tools, turns 10 years old today.  April 10th, 1998.  Today we'd like to extend our congratulations to Jorge and crew on making something that really has stood the test of time.  They survived the dot-com bust and are still going strong!

Scarebear just released a new theme last month that was featured at WC.  Be sure to take a look!

Just needed to add that Winstep has certainly changed the way I can skin things, I have learnt so much !! Its a really great application, and I definitely would recommend Winstep to anyone who wants to learn how to skin it ... and its' fairly easy to skin as well ... Congratulations to Jorge and everyone involved with Winstep ..

Almost can't believe it's been 10 years, either. 1998 seems like only yesterday, when John T.Folden and I got together to create NextSTART and Winstep Software Technologies. At the time there was no true skinnable menu system out there, which is why I created one, as me and John were both trying to re-create the NeXT OS environment on Windows.

At the time even WindowBlinds was still in early incarnation states (0.38 Beta, if I remember correctly) and Brad Wardel was struggling to get Stardock off the ground after the death of the OS/2 market.

It's a credit to his marketing genius how he managed to make Stardock the reference company for OS customization not once, but twice (first time for OS/2, second time for Windows)! If it wasn't for him, the skinning market would not have become mainstream and there would be no skinning community as we know it today. Hats off to him as well!

Congrats Jorge! I've seen many skinnable applications come and go over the years. Few have managed to not only survive, but improve with each new edition. WinStep certainly has done that. Here's to ten more years at least

Well, I have a silly question: do WinStep and WindowBlinds work together harmoniously? In other words, if I'm running WinStep will by NextStart menu be skinned to look like the current 'blind I have running? Also, I realize this may not be the right forum for this question, but I guess I'm trying to figure out it if this software is right for me: what are the key differences between WinStep Xtreme and Aston Shell?

It's a respect relationship: WindowBlinds leaves Winstep alone and Winstep leaves WindowBlinds alone. Usually you can always find a WindowBlinds theme that goes well with or is a companion to a specific Winstep theme. As for the Aston Shell comparison, well, try both and find out for yourself.  For starters, Aston replaces Windows Explorer as the shell, while Winstep Xtreme does its job as a normal application.
