I finally gave in a few years ago.  I HATE HATE HATE giving out my number.  My phone is for MY convienience, not yours.  I use it when I need it, but if I had to give it up, I would. 

Unfortunately, I've grown addicted to the convienience of being able to call my DH and ask, "what was I supposed to get at the store for you?" or call a friend to pick up my kids when I am running late....plus the ability to drive cross country, get lost and call someone for directions!

If it cost much more than it does now, I would give it up.  BUt if you are offering $10 a day.....I'll take it!

Exactly! And hence why I would not give mine up. I dont take a call unless I know the number. If it is important, they will leave a message. If not, I did not need to get it.

What inspired the question was a report on the local news last night that claimed some survey was done where the answers that came back indicated that 'most' people couldn't or wouldn't give up their cell phone.

Personally I don't depend on the damned thing, but I know I've seen far too many people who seem to need theirs more than, or at least as much as, the oxygen in the air in the atmosphere.

I don't get the dependence on them myself.  Why someone would feel that they have to have constant or nearly constant accessibility and communication with someone else is beyond my comprehension.  I'd have no problem (except for having to pay a bill for a device I have a contract to keep for another several months) putting the thing into a trash can and leaving it there.  About the only time I even came close to feeling a dependence upon a cell phone was when I was job hunting several years back (when I had no job at the time, having been laid off by prior employer).  At that point I wanted people to be able to find me asap in case there was a job interview possibility.  Other than that though, I am happiest if the phone never rings.

Would you give up your home phone/landline just as easily?

Like Benmeister, I only have a cellphone. As I am rarely home during the week, except to sleep, and because my daughter needs to be able to get in touch with me if something critical is happening, I carry one. If it were possible, I wouldn't own one at all. I text a bit, because it's cheaper and totally at my convenience. I don't have to sit and chat and can just give details about my whereabouts and whenI'llbetheres.

Quite obviously, though, working for a cellphone company has turned me off about talking to people on any sort of device. I'd rather meet up in person, if at all possible.

The cell phone I have is a company issued one for company business. I don't own a personal one. Don't need one, don't want one.

BTW, I take money orders or prepaid credit cards. I can give you my home address or my PO Box.

I could live without mine!  I've left mine at home before and it did feel weird!  The only thing is all my numbers are in my cell phone address book....terrible I know!  But I would win your bet!
