I just recently started playing the full version of the game (I pre-ordered it and played the betas, but college exams delayed me playing the full release for a while). I've been playing single player quite a bit, and have noted a few things that I think could/should be improved in regards to the AI and other things.
First off, it seems like if you dont pander to at least a few of the AIs - ALL of them will gang up on you. I had this happen in a game on the Gateway map with 5 AIs (another interesting thing is that I picked random for all of their races, and they all ended up Vasari.. go figure

), where I catagorically ignored all of their demands and proceeded to rush to the Gateway planet as soon as possible to reach the other star system and get it all for myself. The plan was hinged on that the other five would be too busy tearing eachother apart to bother with me. That, and the Gateway system was heavily fortified with hangar defenses and beam cannons (I was playing advent, bahaha), so any exploratory fleet would most likely warp out instead of engaging in battle.
Unfortunately, things did not go quite as planned. About the time I had 5 or so planets/asteroids/etc under my control in the new galaxy, my original home world had fallen as well as my forward asteroid system as well. Gateway was already set as the new home world so I wasnt terribly worried. At least not until three AIs decided to warp(old habits die hard

) or rather phase jump their combined fleets into the Gateway system and destroy everything of my own while ignoring eachother.
I havent finished playing the game, but I'm fairly certain I know how it's going to end. My other ice planets are negative income, so unless I can beef a few of them up really fast im looking at very very low credit income for quite a while, which would most likely prove fatal - if they dont decide to pay me a visit in the other star system first.
Another huge problem that I think needs to be addressed is the Dark Armada end-game tech for the Vasari. If you can get it and at least 5-7 phase gates, victory is all but inevitable. I was at the point where I had to upgrade my fleet supply every 5-6 minutes just to keep up with the free ships I was getting, and this was against two Hard ais. I could afford to lose massive fleets because they would be completely replaced in ten minutes. That's just plain unfair.
My last complaint/comment (at least so far) is that there's no single-player campaign. Not because I really wanted to play through a campaign, but because I wanted to know how the story plays out >;[
