Bush or Kerry?
Bush has a lot riding on our quick removal from Iraq. And by extension all Republicans do.
Kerry is in no hurry since it can always be called "Bush's mess" and not Kerrys fault. Also, if he leaves too soon and the place falls apart - it will have been his fault for being too eager about withdrawing.
The French have said they aren't going in there no matter who is President. Both Bush and Kerry want UN support. But just like any UN action - that means mainly a US force.
Nixon got us out of Viet Nam. As unpopular as he was - he did that. I think Bush, despite being unpopular - will get us out of Iraq with all due haste. Kerry benefits from showing Iraq as a Quagmire. His re-election campaign begins as soon as he gets into office - and his strongest point is anti-Iraq. It is in his interest to draw out our removal for four years so that we leave in 2008 and he can run on it again. Is Kerry an opportunist? Would he do or say things just to benefit himself? Would he do/say something to get (re)elected? I think we know the answer.
Is there more to it? Do you have something that I am not considering?
