Well written, well acted, great story.

Yes, it's brilliant. Best movie of last year, in fact. Why people refuse to see it is a mystery to me. I dare anyone -- man, woman, dog, cat -- to watch it and not cry. It's incredibly heartfelt and yet not manipulative. And it features that extreme rarity in films: non-annoying child actors. So everyone, find two hours one weekend, rent the DVD, and have the Kleenex handy.

That, unfortunately, is the case. It must have been low budget. I would never have seen it, but a friend of mine, realizing this, took me to see it after he'd gone himself. The following weekend, I took my room mate to ensure that she would see it. In fact, I bought the DVD so that I could make everyone I know watch it.

It is a good movie. It's a bit of a tear jerker, but I think it escapes being trite. It's fulfilling. The players do an excellent job, and as "Me" above points out, the children in the movie don't annoy. Handy, since the story is seen from the eldest daughter's point of view. The youngest girl is just fun.


I realize I've omitted any details about the movie above... It is about an Irish family who immigrates to New York after experiencing a devastating loss. The father tries to find work as an actor, while the mother works at an ice cream parlor. The story unfolds through the eyes of the eldest daughter, who narrates the present as well as filling you in on details from the past.

I watched it, I really liked it. I'm not going to give any details either, but what was your opinion?

I of course thought it was wonderful. I only know (now) 4 other people who've seen it, and we all agree. I'm hoping to turn others onto it.

I read your review and took your advice and rented it. Tissues and all. It was wonderful. A little dark perhaps (for lack of a better word) but wonderful. Somewhat like the movie "Angela's Ashes" only not as sad and depressing. It isn't due back until tomorrow and I think if I can find the time, I may find myself watching it one more time. And it is a good thing that first impressions aren't always correct. I really had the wrong idea of the neighbor at first.
