You have some very good points. I would make one caveat about sexual selection though. While people do look for intelligent permanent mates as you state, people do have sex with eachother based solely on physical attraction. Marriage isn't permanent in this society nor is it a requisite for children. The majority of people I run into the course of my workday are not married and have children, mostly by accident.

While looking for a marriage or life partner, you are totally correct, but people do have flings, one night stands, etc etc. In many cases people aren't looking for a mate, just pleasure.

True, in the end dumb people still have children. I'm just countering the claim that because the natural selection pressure might be reduced in modern society (which isn't even something that's even been proven btw), that the population mental abilities would necessarily devolve over time. In fact it seems likely that the initial evolution of intelligence in the first place may have had as much to do with sexual selection as it did selection pressures from risk of death.



There is usually some sort of reverse casualties at play in alot of peoples mind about people who are down on their luck or somehow require assistance. It's somehow assumed that because they have 'made it' in some fashion, that for anyone who needs assistance it is somehow their fault. It is actually pretty easy to group people like you and blame you for all your problems.

I'm not saying that alot of people actually don't have a hand in their own problems. Most people could have made some other choice at some point in their life that could have changed their fate for the better (unless your talking about something like cancer when you don't smoke). However, people will always ignore societies responsibility for that individuals fate as well, which is often bigger than the possible wrong choices that individual may have made.

The fact is that the people at the top (especially in the US) don't give a flying fark about any of us, wish us to keep fighting and labeling each other while they get rich off of our efforts. If you're not in top percentile of society, you don't really count. So please, don't vote, it's not like the people in power really care what you think anyway. Just be a dumb consumer, buy whatever they tell you to buy and go home to your isolated lives. Don't talk to anyone different than you, they are all in a category that is less than human. Go play some game and don't ever believe any injustice is ever done in your name.

Moral values? Laws? Those are for poor people. Don't ever wonder why the US locks up far more people in prison than a country with an abominable human rights record like China. Rights? Those are for corporations, not for people. Corporation have the right to plunder and exploit any available resources and will be backed up by law, while not being held accountable to the same laws. People's right on the other hand seem far more mutable and dependent on the mood of the executive branch.

Religion? That's a tool of whoever is in power. What a better way for those with power to filter down their 'moral values' than by way of the religious institutions which they support and build. So please don't think about religion, all the thought has already done for you and regurgitated answers are already there for you digestion. For that matter, don't bother reading period. There are so many more vapid forms of entertainment out there for you to buy which require less thought on your part, most with the hidden message that you can only be cool if you buy our product. Why think at all when all the thought has already been premanufactured for you.

Oh yeah, and blame scientists on all our problems, what have they ever done but improve the quality of most of our lives and allow for such a burgeoning population to exist in the first place? It's not like technology behind farming has improved time, it must have been that there just weren't enough farmers in the first place and now with more people we can farm more. Never mind the fact that there are now less people farming the soil than there were 30 years ago.

For that matter, continue to believe that a planet with finite resources can support an infinitely growing population. The Malthusian catastrophe can always be prevented because of someone born in Sudan who may have never seen a working telephone. It's not like ecosystems are constantly being destroyed, and a massive number of extinctions aren't going on right now, while global warming also goes unchecked. Everything is hunky dory on planet earth thanks to human initiative, and soon an infinite population will be realized. Very true. I think I was hinitng at a larger scale problem or future problem. Yeah, we can go to the moon or mars or where ever and colonize one day. That is scientific and solveable.

But what will we bring with us? You don't think the first 30, 50, 100 years on the moon will be easy? Someone will bring crack with them to the moon. Someone will get "cabin fever" and go postal and axe thier family. Someone will throw an unwanted baby out the airlock. Anywhere we go in the universe, we're gonna bring our societies problems with us.

We kinda picture it with rose colored glasses. Little bubbles filed with happy people, working hard and getting along. And why not dream of that? Who doesn't want to live in a society where things go right? A world with out drug dealers/addicts, gangs, etc; that doesn't seem so bad.

If you want to change something about presidential elections, don't start with the electoral college, start with the primary elections. It's ****ing stupid that only the first handful of states get any sort of choice, and now the other 45 states only have a choice between Obama and Clinton (not that I'm a member of either party, that's just the example that springs to mind).

For the drug trade, why don't we use the model we already have, the one we already know works (well enough, anyway)? During prohibition we had EXACTLY the same problems with bootleggers that we now have with drug dealers, and guess what? Legalizing their product stopped the violence. It didn't end the abuse of the product, but the user end of the trade is not the part that causes crime. It's the enormous amounts of cash chasing a restricted supply that causes turf wars, etc. And it the case of meth, it would end the lab explosions, because competent people would be making it.

From your tagline, the book you're referring to was by Heinlein. "An armed society is a polite society" is one of his most famous quotes, but it's complete bullshit. An armed society is a paranoid, vigilante-oriented society, where most justice is handed out by an outraged family member or a lynch mob. And if it's all the same to you, I'd prefer NOT to be shot by some college freshman because she thinks I'm stalking her, when in reality we just happen to be parked near each other. That's part of the reason I dislike the fact that my state doesn't allow non-lethal weapons to be carried. A misguided tazing or macing is far more survivable.

First, We do not have the same problems with bootleggers that we have with drugdealers. The appear similar prima facia, but infact are very different. Crack is more addicting than alcohol. You can't exactly do it in moderation. While major violence can be attributed to dopers as it was to bootlegger, the majority of crime and violence (including very brutal crime) is actutally attributed to thier clientelle. I watched a confession of a guy who stabbed his mom to death to get money to buy a 20 rock. I know a a guy who got a large inherintence (6 figures). Within 5 years he smoked it up. Every prostitute I talk to has a crack addiction. You can actually look at stats on a map for thefts, CD's Robberies, and BE's, and make very accurate guesses as to where dope houses are, as its the clientelle that need the money/goods so they can get a fix.

You'll get jumped, robbed and beaten when you walk down the street at night, not by drug dealers, but by crack heads who want your money and credit cards to trade in for drugs.

The big difference between alcohol crime of the 20's and modern drug crime, is the power of the drug compared to alcohol on the user.

Secondly, an armed society is nothing more than an armed society. The presence of weapons in a society does not make it more/less violent. It is the attitude of the populace towards weapons and civil order that make the difference. If the general attitude of the people is "We'll take care of our own problems our own way", you'll have a more violent society as people will be more inclined to take the "law" into their own hands, hence more violence.
If the general attituted is to differ to a higher power (court, police, etc), you tend to have a less violent populace as the people will settle thier differences through "official" channels as opposed to with knives and guns on the street.
