This post is meant to spark some discussion regarding what beta players and fans would like to see in terms of diplomacy and espionage.
First, what diplomatic options will be given in the game? Will there be non-aggression pacts, peace treaties, trade and research treaties, and defensive as well as full alliances? I feel that a more refined and developed system with numerous degrees of a relationship between two empires will give the 4X portion of Sins of a Solar Empire more presence and credibility. I’m wary that a limited diplomacy model will give the feeling of a Homeworld imitation with a couple afterthoughts of a relatively peaceful victory added in.
Also, in terms of espionage, how extensive will the system be? Will empires actually send agents to planets to gather information on the location and the opposing empire itself? Will there be opportunities to conduct subterfuge and sabotage? Or, information simply be acquired over time? Again, I believe a more extensive model will help the game keep a 4X appeal.
What’s everyone’s opinions on this? I realize there is a tradeoff and developing these models will give the team less time to work on other aspects. Would the tradeoff be worth it?
