Do allies automatically surrender to each other?

the iconian refuge in my game only has four planets that i am not in a position to take right now. they are at war with three or four other powerful civs....if i make them my ally will they automatically surrender to me if they are going to(i would be their only ally)? and if they dont surrender and i get in a position to take them and break the alliance does that hurt my rep with other civs?

If you break your treaty is hurts your rep. As for the surrendering thing im not sure. Whenever I'm in an alliance i get dragged into wars I cant win. Tend to avoid them now.

I know this is an old thread, but I just had personal experience with this in DA 1.80c. The Arceans were at war with everyone but me. I allied with them (heck, I had to give them Alliance to do it). I then bribed the Altarians to stop fighting them. A few turns later, the Arceans surrendered their worlds to the ALTARIANS! AFAIK, I was the only one even on speaking terms with them. Yet, they didn't surrender their worlds to me, their sole Ally.

This really does need to be changed in Twilight. It's so blatantly illogical. (I can understand unrealistic things, but not illogical things in strat games, and this one has driven me bonkers for ages)

Not sure what the exact formula is for surrendering. I think if somebody starts a war with another civilization, they will surrender to them if they are almost lost. eg

You are allies with the Torians
The Torians start a war with the Drengin and start getting badly defeated, they will surrender to the Drengins
The Drengin start the war and start beating the Torians badly, they will surrender their remaining worlds to you.
Thats the pattern I have mostly noticed.

I remember one game The Torians attacked me and my allies totally creamed them. I did'nt fire a shot cause they were on the other side of the board. They said I was too powerful and surrendered to me.

The surrender functions were really wacky in the DA beta and I only recently turned them back on. I'm pretty sure I've seen a deviation from the pattern PlayJeff45 describes--an AI attacked me, came to regret it swiftly, and surrendered to a different AI. But I forget whether the AI that attacked me had also attacked the other AI.

Two things I'd like in this area:

1) Surrender decisions made with vengence in mind by evil cultures, survival of population (admittedly through mystical genetic conversion) for good cultures, and a history-influenced choice between those tactics for neutral cultures.

2) A tweak to the Treaties tab that put an arrow on the At War lines showing which one in the pair started the particluar war (make the red lines look like the lines for the new treaties).

In #1, like orientations should probably be a factor (well, maybe not Evil to Evil, if they were smart, they'd surrender Evil to Neutral). But, in my case, both I and the Arceans were Neutral (they were actually non-defined, but leaning Neutral) and the Altarians were Good (or Good-leaning). I'd expect a Neutral to Neutral surrender to be more logical. Ditto for Good to Good.

I really like the idea of arrows for wars instead of the non-directed line segments.
