I'd be willing to bet that any race that could cooperate enough to achieve intergalactic travel would respond to us in the same way we'd respond to a snake filled boiling stagnant salt water pirhanna pond when we have a cut on our finger. Most of us would just leave it be and walk around it.
I personally feel that the requirment of extra terrestrials being much more socially advanced then us is quite questionable. If the last two hundred years have shown us anything, technological achievment does not equate to equal achievments in social progress. If anyhting, I would say the average person today is less generous and caring.
My personal opinion on the matter is that IF we were to ever contact another civilization out there in the black, that we would find that they are more like us then we would previously give them credit for.
