Comcast, oh how I love to hate thee. Well, not really hate, just a strong distaste maybe.
Actually, all things considered, Comcast has been decent for me over the last several years. There's an earlier hatred/distaste for them over past treatment (them losing a payment that was made, then having a nasty attitude about making things right over wanting to charge cancellation fees, etc.), and a very unhappy extended period of paying for TV services that I never needed just so I could say a few pennies (and I quite literally mean pennies) each month on my hi-speed internet service bill. Approximately $15/month over the last 3 years for TV services so I could save approximately $15/month on my hi-speed internet bill (net savings per month: $0).
Their service was ok. Probably even pretty good, all things considered. But I despised paying them $15/month for something I didn't need at all. I get 3x the speed from Verizon's FiOS service for $10 less per month. I could have had similar (faster because downlink speed is faster on FiOS) to cable speed for $20 less per month if I had wanted.
I'm no fool (despite what some may think
). I took Verizon's offering and am now speeding along the information super-highway about as fast as anyone can go. Very nice.
Back to the rant a bit though - Comcast's last little blow for me was in my calling to cancel. 30+ minutes on the phone listening to the same looped information telling me of Comcast's great triple play offering. When the operator/service person finally picked up I was glad to be put out of my misery of listening to the same stuff repeated seemingly endlessly. The actual cancellation (at least so far) was relatively painless. The operator asked what I was calling about, verified account information, service address, etc., and asked when the last day would be. I took the choice of 'today' and she instructed me that I'd get a final statement that will be paid instead of the most recent bill I was looking at.
I hope the rest of the cancellation goes smoothly, but I'll believe it when I see it. Meanwhile, thanks for the service Comcast, but on your pricing: learn how to unbundle without wiping out the discounts. It might have kept you a few more customers.
