CPU Power

Hi! I have a question about the option that allow me to use CPU intensive algorithms (spelling?). What's the disadvantage in using them? Am I shortening the life of my PC? Until now everything is running perfectly well. Can I safely continue to use this option?

Good question actually, at first glance I would say the extra CPU power consumed won’t have a measurable effect on your CPU life.

I have used numerous different CPU’s over the past 18 years and I have never had one fail outside user induced failure (extreme overclocking). Neither have any of my friends with an equal amount of computer experience. Some CPU’s I’ve had running almost nonstop for over 6 years. Student housing server.

Has anybody in this forum ever have a CPU fail for no reason what so ever.
No reason doesn’t include broken MB, broken PSU, bad cooling or extreme overclocking.

I also can’t find MTBF (mean time before failure) info on CPU’s from any reliable source.
Probably because CPU’s get replaced because of performance issues long before they reach their technical end of life.

Yes, allowing the game to use the CPU more efficiently will not decrease its lifespan to any measurable degree.

It can make the game a lot funner, though.

Yes....But it is very rare. If you have a hundred servers running continuously over a years time, I would expect one or two failures. If the hardware is more than three years old maybe three or four failures...Even that may be an overestimate, I have three or four hundred servers at my workplace, but I haven't been actually counting the CPU failures...

Edit: Actually had one in the last 24 hours

One thing about computer hardware is there is no requirement for built in self destruct like with a fridge or a tv.

As a fridge manufacturer, you don't really want it lasting much longer than 10 years, but since computer hardware becomes obselete well before that, there is no need for manufactureres to actively set out to limit product longjevity.

Certainly you can. This is not some kind of 'overclocking' mechanism. It simply gives the AI more processor power, in order to make better decisions. The only possible downside is that it may take slightly more time in between turns (depending on what rig you use), although I haven't noticed any real difference.

The CPU power option has absolutely nothing to do with any physical aspects of your CPU... Come on guys... Sheesh. All it means is that you're letting the game take more time to complete more complex calculations to make the A.I. more challenging. All it's going to do is slow down the time inbetween turns if you don't have a fast computer.
