A little help with these forums and Firefox.

I started using Firefox last week. So far it's done quite well. Definately faster than IE. I'm having one problem on the forums though. Whenever I would reply or post when on IE, when I go back to the everything link the reply would be at the top as normal. Now with FF, If I reply it never shows me replying or moves the message to the top on recent posts. My replies are there of course and when others make replies it goes to the top as normal on my screen, just my own don't show up. Is there a setting or something in FF that is causing this? Like I said, never had this problem with IE, sometimes it would take a few minutes to update, but now it won't at all till someone else posts after me. Thanks for any help from some of you FF guys.

I use FF and have exactly this same problem. But it doesn't do this for other forums, so I don't think it is a firefox problem/setting. Sorry I can't help anymore than that.

I'm not currently using FireFox (even though it seemed a while back that everyone on the forum was telling me to). This happens somewhat in IE as well. It can take some time (3~5 minutes) for a post to come to the top. To ask a stupid question do you try refreshing the page? That sometimes seems to speed it up.

I guess if you *never* see your post come to the top even after say 5~10 minutes, then there may be a problem.

Kryo has mentioned that these forums are in the process of being rebuilt and recommended that any forum specific issues be addressed in an email to support@stardock.com.

It might be best to wait for Kryo to confirm this before you do it though.

I mostly use Opera and have not used anything in the Firefox family since before Netscape Communicator. I have a fairly different set of complaints I've not yet bothered to describe, and I suspect IE pollution is at root for both DethAdder's and my frustrations with the forum functionality (and by extension the fact that commercial orgs currently dominate web standards implenetations).

It has nothing to do with which browser you use, and everything to do with how your timing coincides with the recent posts list refreshing its database cache. It'll show up, you just have to wait until the cache is refreshed on the server. No amount of configuration tweaking or refresh monkeying will change that.

Yea.. I used to see this with IE and refresh would help at times.

It will go to the top if I totally leave the site for a few minutes I found, but if I stay browsing the forums for even say, a half hour it won't update and it's only my own posts. If others post and I go back to everything, theirs will be there. This has only started with FF, so it just must be one of those things. It's really no biggie, but thought maybe others have had or solved this little problem.

Deth, what you're saying here (plus some other broadsides about "buggy forum" stuff) make me at least half-confident that there's some browser-war crap involved in your complaint. I'm not sure I fully understand your core question, but I'm modestly confident that "proprietary code" is the true culprit.

Well now I can't login to The Galactic Core with FF anymore, but IE logs in just fine. So FF maybe on the way out along with all the rest of the alternative browsers I've tried. Worked fine for a few days, but now I'm running into all kinds of little nags with it. Oh well, I gave it a shot.

Firefox is far and away the best browser out there. Don't believe me? Look at the features that M$ has hijacked from FF to add to IE7. Little question for you; have you set FF to accept cookies? Tools\Options\Privacy\tick Accept cookies.

Reseting browser cache/cookies can help at times, actually thats what SD suggested with GC2 forum quirks some time ago

I do feel like PR guy for the FF, but the matter of fact is that I have had far less issues with FF than IE. I have about 50 bookmarks or so with around 20 forums/login/shop sites and zero problems.

I have installed FF at work and it seems to run fine. But the only noticeable benefit is the spell checker.

My new home PC isn't fully set up yet, but it's clear that the issues that I had with IE6 on a 900 MHz Celeron are simply not present on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo e6600.

Since installing FF on my home PC would mean that I would have 40,020 files on my computer that I don't know what they do versus only 40,000 files that I would have without it, I probably won't bother to install FF on my home PC until I start having some issues with IE6.

Mumble, My esteemed colleague; I have very strong opinions on this subject matter, but as I have been suffering through the influenza for the last week or so, I haven't the strength to debate you right now. One small thing... why are you not using IE7?

And for the record, windows finally automatically upgraded me from IE6 to IE7. I gave it a try, and honestly don't care for the interface changes. Where's my menu at the top??!!!

One small thing... why are you not using IE7

Just cause IE6 was in the bundle. I'm currently stripping approximately 3.5 GB of crap that HP seems bound and determined to put on my new PC. I get far more enjoyment stripping things off my PC than in installing new stuff.

I hate icons on my desktop, I prefer to run everything from the start menu. I also like the start menu to be simple, clean and understandable. I'm a firm believer in less is more. If IE6 "apparently" works than I'll just stay with it. I do understand that "apparently" and "actually" are not really the same thing, but I need a compelling reason to install something new.

I don't allow auto-upgrades of any kind. I particularly dislike "upgrades" that take away functionality. One example of this is the "upgrade" of media player where you can no longer "save as".

I agree with this philosophy 100%. My desktop is always cluttered with files I'm currently working with before they reach their final destination on the hard drive.

However, i find the start menu annoying. What I do is put the auto-launch icons right on my toolbar (drag and drop shortcut from desktop to toolbar).

This, combined with me putting my toolbar on the lefthand side, and auto-hiding it, is *my* optimal working environment. Opening anything is merely running my mouse to the left hand side of the screen and clicking an icon... no matter what is already open.

No, it would be just one more thing to install.

This is how my start menu and desktop look. I have everything I need and nothing I don't. I find it extremely simple to navigate.

one thing regarding IE 7 and FF2.0 i have both installed and doing a comparitive run, like FF much better (still, i've been using it since 0.9x) one significant thing i discovered was that IE7 with ONE tab open takes up nearly twice the memory that a FF windows with FOUR tabs open... now its not like i'm hurting for memory while i'm browsing, i've got a gig, but honestly, i don't think i want to give 77mg of memory to one freakin program that is definitely not a game

It allows you to view multiple pages simultaneously within one window so you don't have to run multiple browser instances.

And mumble... I prefer things pretty minimal myself, but there is such a thing as going *too far*... I don't let things run that I don't know about either, but there's a difference between controlling your computer and letting it (or fear of losing performance) control you.

In FF and IE7 instead of opening a new window to browse multiple sites, you open a new tab. Kind of cool, but I'm back on IE6 after the FF crap.

I installed IE7 a couple of weeks ago, and I found the tabs annoying since I always wound up closing down the entire browser by accident instead of the specific page. So I'm ruling out Firefox if that's supposed to be a great feature.

Tabs seem to be an alternative to opening a page in a new window, with IE7 you have the original option of opening in new window, or in a tab.

I don't let things run that I don't know about either, but there's a difference between controlling your computer and letting it (or fear of losing performance) control you.

I avoided converting to Windows for the longest time possible (until DOS game software began disappearing), and only used it when a specific program required it. I've never been a fan of graphic user interface, because I felt it was taking some of the control of the machine away from me, since I first learned computing using command line syntax.

You can do either with FF as well. To tab or not to tab, is purely a personal preference in both IE7 and FF.

When you close the browser and have multiple tabs open in FF, it gives you a warning saying "are you sure you want to do this mang? cuz you gotz more than one tab open. Maybe you want to just close the tab"

This message defaults to on from your first run, but when you become accustomed to it, you can turn this feature off (inside the message as well... check box to say "always show me this message").
