So there's an opinion piece in the New York Sun (found here: Earmarks: Democrats' First Test), picked up by other news services and outlets that is now being (apparently) followed up by action. Such action as detailed here: Dems to kill thousands of hometown projects (from MSNBC).
There's just a few problems with the details though (the devil is always in the details, isn't he?).
We're about to turn the foxes lose and let them guard the hen-house. Actually, there's no "about to" about it, as it's gonna happen thanks to the recent mid-term elections. We're gonna have the likes of Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va. in charge of helping to eliminate "pork" projects. This would be the same Robert Byrd that has never met a pork product he didn't think he could make bigger (at least if it involved something that might benefit his home state).
Consider too that we'll have the likes of Rep. Murtha (D-PA) involved here too. The same guy that was a figure in the Abscam scandals many years ago (and likely would have been convicted if someone offered him the right amount of money or other favors to benefit "his constituents").
Anyone that thinks that the Democrats will actually bring cuts in the pork in the budget is probably about as far gone as it gets and should probably join the resident Clueless Old Liberal way out on the limb over to the left.
I'd like to hope for positive change here, but I've been around long enough, and seen enough coming and going in politics to know that the only thing that will really change is who will benefit from the pork. What was going to red states will now go to blue. That's about all that will really happen here.
